The Department of Development Services, Building Development Division, is seeking to fill a full-time position as a Special Inspections Senior Engineer to work on both residential and commercial construction projects that have a significant structural engineering component. We are looking for a high performing, trustworthy employee who possesses the ability to provide technical information to people with varying technical backgrounds.

About This Role
This job is a mix of office and field work. Th office portion of the job requires reviewing construction drawings, engineering reports and communication with both internal and external customers to ensure public safety in the constructed facilities. The field portion of the work includes site visits to active construction sites to determine if the construction is being done according to the approved plans. Our role is performing quality assurance to ensure the construction and testing comply with the building code and the approved plans. This is accomplished by on-site communication with the contractors, engineers, owners and citizens.
Minimum Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 2 years of related (experience as a design professional, construction inspector, plan reviewer, inspector and/or code enforcement inspector) experience.
Preferences
4 years of engineering experience
Skill using MS Office and occasionally structural and geotechnical engineering software and CAD
Experience with computer data entry to prepare, maintain and update reports under different formats
Experience applying code knowledge to perform quality control reviews
Experience scheduling maintenance and inspections prior to building inspections
Work Schedule: This position works a standard Monday-Friday schedule, working 37.5 hours per week.
Special Requirements
Must be certified as an E.I.T. (Engineer in Training)
Must become certified by the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development as a Commercial Building Inspector within 18 months of employment, in accordance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code
Must become certified as a Residential Building Inspector within 36 months of employment in accordance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code
Must possess a valid driver’s license
Must pass a DMV records check
Starting Salary Range:$85,000 - $91,850
