RN CHARGE NURSE
Reports To: Director of Nursing
Position Summary: The primary responsibility of this job is the supervision of nursing assistants and Licensed nurses. This person is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of the resident.
Qualifications:
Graduate from a state- accredited school of nursing and hold a current unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in the state of West Virginia.
Must be knowledgeable of current gerontological concepts as applies to long term care.
Should possess good leadership skills, knowledge of administrative nursing, and principles of supervision.
Must be familiar with Medicare and Medicaid requirements for Long Term Care Facilities as well as WV Nursing Home Licensure Rules.
Must possess excellent communication skills.
General Description of Responsibilities:
Directs under the supervision of case management and the DON the administrative and technical aspects of resident care.
Interprets operating policies.
Works under the direction of the physician on matters directly associated with resident care. Observes resident care given by floor associates daily and intervenes as necessary to ensure quality care.
Maintain proper medical records such as charting nursing care given, recording vital signs etc.
Assigns and directs departmental duties to other health care personnel.
May evaluate associate work performance through performance appraisal.
Will recommend to supervisor employment and or discharge of licensed and non-licensed personnel.
Assists residents and families with regard to physical, social, nutritional, spiritual and psychological needs.
Evaluates resident care to reflect resident care plan. Communicate findings to appropriate RN case Manager.
Maintains satisfactory working relationships with associates, physicians, other departments and visitors.
Observes sanitation of the facility and takes corrective action accordingly.
Displays required knowledge of fire and disaster plans to insure safe environment for residents and other staff.
May be required to serve as floor nurse/medication/treatment nurse on any shift, as staffing deems necessary.
Recommend topics for in-service education based on observations of staff.
Contributes to the professional growth and development of self and associates by keeping abreast of changes in nursing practice through current literature and workshops. Will be required to attend out of town seminars at the request of administration.
May be required to act as RN on call as designated.
Responsible for the proper use of supplies and proper working condition of equipment.
Completes monthly in-services, mandatory and departmental within 48 hrs unless otherwise excused.
Attends meetings as scheduled.
Displays responsibility by adhering to guidelines for absenteeism, tardiness, and dress code.
Will relieve medication/treatment nurses during shortage as needed and has knowledge of current drugs with regard to usage, dosage, and side effects.
Must be able to administer IV Therapy.
Must be able to draw blood.
Continuously evaluates patient’s symptoms, reactions, and progress and documents accordingly.

Requires speaking to individuals and addressing small groups. Requires the ability to read both handwritten and printed materials. Must be able to create short memos and documents daily. Requires manipulating of fingers and must be able to distinguish colors, have good (correctible) vision. Must be able to perceive spoken voice clearly. Requires interpersonal skills sufficient enough to work closely as a team. Requires the ability to be flexible in the work environment performing a variety of frequently changing tasks. Requires high level cognitive, interpretive, or judgement skills. Requires the ability to plan negotiate, direct, control and monitor others activities.
Frequently:
Uses telephone. Must frequently work with arms above waist. Requires standing and sitting. frequently will be creating long documents. Requires operations of knobs levers and cranks. Must have highly accurate depth perception.
Infrequently:
Occasionally requires being to reach above shoulder level, working with body bent at the waist, and working in kneeling position, and crawling. Will occasionally work with arms above shoulder height, pushing, pulling, stooping and lifting approximately 80 pounds. May occasionally be working from a computer display. Occasionally requires the ability to feel for texture and be able to distinguish smells. Must be able to occasionally be able to turn wrenches, valves and handles with a strong grip. Must have balance and coordination and be able to detect warning horns and sirens above 70 decibels. Must be able to sustain concentration and prolonged commitment to tasks.

Characteristics and Environmental Factors:
Requires 100% inside work. Exposed to Blood Bourne Pathogens and noise less than 70 decibels. Requires working alone as well as working closely with others. Requires shift work. Works in a traditional geriatric facility. Surroundings are well lighted and ventilated. Walks, sits, and stands intermittently during work day. Some lifting and turning of residents and equipment. Exposed to infectious diseases.
Skills required:
Be familiar with medical record documentation.
Knowledgeable about use of medical equipment used in geriatric setting.
Must possess supervisor skills and be willing to accept supervisory assignments; such as working relationship with physicians, associates, other departments and visitors.
Should have the ability to conduct education for nursing department as needed.
Training, skills and experience requirements:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Current License in the state of West Virginia.
Should have knowledge of administrative nursing techniques, unit management and principle of supervision.
Preferred at least 2 years general duty as a staff nurse.
Displays responsibility by adhering to guidelines of absenteeism, tardiness and dress codes.
Must be knowledgeable about current gerontological concepts as applied to long term care.
Must be interested in expanding education through learning information offered in the in-service education programs.
