Job Title: Classroom Instructional Aide
Reports to: Principal and Teacher(s) Assigned
Primary Purpose:
Provide instructional assistance to students under the direct supervision of a certified teacher. Assist in preparing, conducting, and managing of classroom activities.
Purpose Statement: The job of Paraeducator Special Education Academic and Behavioral Learning Environment (ABLE) is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibility for supervising students assigned to the Academic and Behavioral Learning Environment (ABLE); documenting student behavior; and providing information to teachers and/or other personnel. This job reports to the Executive Director of Special Programs.
Essential Functions
- Assists with washroom breaks for the purpose of providing for the safety of the student.
- Collects class work from students for the purpose of returning the work to the teacher for evaluation.
- Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel for the purpose of assisting in academic progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
- Implements under the supervision of assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
- Intervenes in potential conflicts utilizing appropriate physical and/or therapeutic approaches for the purpose of diffusing confrontations and minimizing disruptions.
- Models conversation, manners, listening, and everyday interactions for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Monitors students during assigned periods for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs other supervisory/security responsibilities as determined by the supervising administrator and the BAC schedule for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Performs general record keeping and clerical functions for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or supervisory staff in meeting mandated requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit pertaining to PISD.
- Provides verbal and/or written feedback of observations for the purpose of informing teacher/s and/or parents of students' progress.
- Remains with students at all times in the BAC for the purpose of providing for the safety of students and deescalating situations outside the classroom.
- Reports problems directly to the supervising administrator for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies.
- Tutors students on assigned class work for the purpose of providing ongoing support in the completion of work assignments.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: behavior and crisis management techniques; instruction techniques; high school curriculum; knowledge of board policy, district, state and federal regulations/laws.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, jobrelated equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, jobrelated data; and utilize jobrelated equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality; working with frequent interruptions; communicating in a positive, nonthreatening manner; and building effective relationships.
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. Working Environment -The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 20% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury.
