What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Accountant- Corporate Insurance Tax position at Principal Financial Group?
We’re looking for an Associate Accountant to join our Corporate Insurance Tax team. In this role, you’ll work to demonstrate awareness and knowledge of applicable professional accounting standards. Accurately record financial transactions and maintain appropriate supporting documentation. At this level incumbents are encouraged to develop competence through performing structured work assignments. Incumbents are also expected to begin building knowledge of the organization, processes, products, tools, and customers.
- Financial Analysis and Reporting: use existing procedures to perform basic accounting analysis and reporting of financial transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), statutory accounting principles (SAP), tax regulations, or other regulatory guidance. This includes, but is not limited to: perform transaction processing and exception handling. Conduct month-end close activities. Calculate routine journal entries and provide accurate and timely financial submissions. Reconcile accounts and prepare and provide financial data for inclusion in the financial control process. Conduct routine variance analysis. Extract and deliver straightforward management information reports used in decision making.
- Compliance and Controls: understand general compliance requirements and apply these to the creation of accurate and timely financial submissions. Understand internal control framework and use this information to provide basic risk mitigation techniques. Operate financial controls, specific user access and/or data integrity controls. Assist with ensuring compliance with regulatory internal control guidance including items such as SOX.
- Perform other duties or essential functions as needed.

Who You Are
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance or equivalent experience required
- CPA or other applicable certifications preferred
- This position may require successful completion of a criminal background check
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$23.29 - $37.45 / hour
Time Off Program
Personal Time Off (PTO) is provided to hourly (non-exempt) employees and provides a set amount of accrued time earned each pay period. Employees can use their PTO for vacation, personal or short-term illness.
