What are the responsibilities and job description for the AVP, Corporate Strategy and Development position at Principal Financial Group?
We’re looking for an AVP, Corporate Strategy & Development to join our Enterprise Strategy team. In this role, you’ll provide enterprise strategy, business development, M&A, and innovation leadership and execution for the small and medium sized business SMB and organization and prioritization of the SMB portfolio. Drive successful implementation of an SMB organization, thereby improving customer and employee experiences and creating value for shareholders consistent with external targets.
- Lead enterprise strategy, business development, M&A, and innovation functions for the SMB organization, including deeply understanding the needs of the organizations as they evolve, actively demonstrating expertise in 3-4 of the functional areas, influencing stakeholders and experts at all levels of the enterprise, and negotiating with potential buyers, sellers, or partners as necessary on behalf of Principal.
- Provide program management of the overall SMB horizontal implementation and SMB portfolio prioritization effort, working in conjunction with responsible business and functional leaders and key stakeholders.
- Providing ongoing performance management with SMB workstream sponsors, workstream leaders, and initiative owners on the successful execution of corporate strategy and development initiatives with significant potential impact to improved customer experience & business results.
- Effectively represent and liaise with SMB stakeholders in the company's strategic, financial, and capital planning activities.
- Actively recruit, train, and develop direct reports and more junior members of the Corporate Strategy and Development team.

- Requires Bachelor’s degree, MBA in finance or strategy preferred
- 10 years of relevant experience, and CPA/CFA/FLMI/CLU plus proven track-record of achievement in the insurance industry in at least 3 of the following 4 functions: strategy, business development, M&A, and innovation.
- Strong strategic thinking, communication, negotiation, analytical, and leadership/coaching skills, and tenacity about improving customer service and employee experiences.
- Ability to build trust and respect, inspire others to work through resistance to change, and work in a matrixed, ambiguous, and politically charged environment.
- Requires ability to develop and maintain good relationships with investment bankers, management consultants, and potential counterparties.
- Must have broad understanding and knowledge of the corporation - its businesses, capital needs, and strategic and operational plans.
- Travel is required.
Work Environments
This role offers an in-office and hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek) work arrangement in Des Moines, IA.
