What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director - Enterprise Architecture position at Principal Financial Group?
We're seeking a Director of Enterprise Architecture: Data and Analytics to drive our organization's data vision and technical strategy. This role will be instrumental in leading and establishing a consistent, efficient, and comprehensive foundation for data and analytics capabilities within our Retirement and Income Solutions division.
Here are some examples of the kinds of things you’ll do:
- Work with business and IT leaders: help formulate enterprise data architecture strategies to align with company’s business strategies and priorities.
- Lead Strategy to Execution: of enterprise-wide data architecture strategies aligned with business objectives
- Engage in Enterprise Architecture Practice: partner with enterprise architect peers to build and lead the execution of enterprise architecture strategy with focus on the Data Domain.
- Deliver Enterprise Data Architecture: create strategic architecture data standards, guidelines, principles, and frameworks that inform and enable execution on strategic outcomes.
- Lead Architecture Data Governance: ensure business capabilities and related data and technology platforms are positioned to support today’s business demands and the strategic objectives of tomorrow.
- Modernize with Engineering Teams: enable/facilitate migration of existing portfolio of applications to AWS public cloud or SaaS based solutions.
- Identify, Research, and Recommend: stay abreast of emerging and innovative technologies, techniques and tools that enable IT and the business to achieve strategic goals.
- Assess Architectural Risk: effectively communicate implications and mitigation strategies to IT staff and management

Who You Are
- You have a Bachelor's degree and 12 years of experience in a multi-business unit global organization or equivalent work experience
- You have proven experience as a Data Architect, for both operational and data analytics capabilities and platforms
- You are passionate about tracking and strategically applying emerging technologies to business solutions in alignment with strategic data needs
- You understand working with/across all enterprise architecture domains (Business, Data, Application, Infrastructure, and Security)
- You have exposure to different data repositories architectures and strategies such as Operational Data Stores, Data Warehouses, Data Lakes, and Data Mesh
Skills That Will Help You Stand Out
- AWS Solution Architect Associate certification
- TOGAF or similar Enterprise Architecture certification
- Experience with Snowflake and AWS services (S3, RDS, Lambda, Redshift, etc.)
- Prior financial services industry experience

Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$153000 - $207000 / year
Time Off Program
Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Work Environments
This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
