What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Accounting Analyst- Corporate Accounting position at Principal Financial Group?
We’re looking for a Senior Accounting Analyst to play a key role on the Corporate Accounting Internal Controls team. This role provides expertise and information leadership for internal controls across the organization and offers a unique opportunity for someone to find innovative solutions to drive success across our operations, providing an internal control perspective to business initiatives and other finance transformation projects. Key responsibilities of this role include:
- Act as a custodian and maintain the integrity and consistency of business governance and internal control frameworks, including SOX and MAR compliance. Contribute to the improvement of risk-based financial controls; develop solutions for the effectiveness of existing controls to manage business risks; and develop and drive implementation of action plans to remediate control deficiencies.
- Projects: act as the subject matter expert and work with project owner to ensure accounting and internal control objectives are met through the design and implementation of new products and/or systems. Identify and implement operational excellence projects, providing business requirements for new systems or enhancements.
- Manage internal controls for Corporate Accounting processes, including documentation and testing to ensure systems or processes are operating as intended. Escalate any findings/variances/issues as needed.
- Provide oversight to the organization’s SOX testing program and center of excellence, including identifying and executing moving controls testing to the center of excellence where appropriate
- Work with subject matter experts to obtain a thorough understanding of their processes; identify areas in the process that pose financial statement risk; and consult with them on what controls should be implemented to appropriately mitigate the risks identified
- Identify, design, document, and test new processes and controls
- Provide coordination and support to multiple business units to ensure consistency of controls between business units where appropriate
- Help identify risks and controls through the financial reporting processes to move data from the underlying systems into financial reporting tools
- Assist in developing training materials for key stakeholders where process changes have been made, and controls have been impacted
- Review and evaluate SOC 1 reports related to service providers, including cloud-based service providers
- Keep detailed documentation of the evolution of control environments and organize all relevant audit work into concise packages which can be shared with auditors

Who You Are
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance or equivalent experience plus 6 years of relevant experience required
- CPA or other applicable certifications preferred
- Informal leadership experience preferred - role requires ability to guide and influence internal control efforts
- Internal controls experience required
- Strong knowledge of the rules of Sarbanes Oxley and Model Audit Rule required
- Insurance or investment accounting experience highly preferred
- IT general controls experience and/or IT experience highly preferred
- Knowledge of operational risks preferred
- Strong project management skills
- Strong communication skills and ability to clearly and concisely articulate key findings and recommendations to stakeholders
- Ability to develop effective visuals to assist in communication
- Self-motivator and team player
- Ability to see the vision of the overall project and align your work to achieve project goals
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$100800 - $167000 / year
Time Off Program
Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
