What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Assistant Gardener position at Private Estate?
Position Summary:
Seasonal Assistant Gardeners are responsible for supporting the gardeners in their work at this highly sophisticated, continually evolving, private estate located in Millbrook, NY. Openings for 2025 positions exist on our Formal Garden, Vegetable Garden and General Horticulture teams. These positions offer great opportunity for learning from skilled, knowledgeable horticulturists and the immersive experience of working in these very fine gardens.
Essential Dutiesand Responsibilities:
- Working as a key team member to maintain the grounds, greenhouses, landscapes and gardens of the property to an established high standard
- Engaging the proper use of tools, equipment and machinery, as well as horticultural techniques
- Participate in weekend coverage and overtime, as needed, and seasonal work schedules established by supervisors
- Communicating with the team about problems, needs or concerns associated with areas of responsibilities
Qualifications:
- Experience in grounds or garden maintenance - fine gardening, greenhouse and pruning experience is desired
- Proficiency in driving all assigned vehicles- experience driving manual transmission a plus
- Proficiency in the proper use of a variety of hand and power tools, machinery and equipment routinely used for landscape, garden, or greenhouse maintenance
- A passion for plants and gardens and the motivation to learn as much as possible
- A mature, team-oriented attitude
- Ability to perform strenuous landscape maintenance-related tasks under a variety of weather conditions
- Established, strong communication skills
- Commitment to maintaining the confidentiality, safety, security and privacy of a private employer

- Discreet individual with ability to work as a team member. A self-starter who can relate well with others in an organized, efficient manner with a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and follow-through
- Good time-management and general organization skills
- Ability to exercise sound judgement, listen closely, follow directions, and communicate clearly
- Approach each day with a positive attitude and be supportive of coworkers
A 40 – hour work week, including occasional weekend days, with overtime during the busy season (May, June, September).
Hourly wage, depending on experience - $22-$24/hour. The possibility for longer-term employment exists for a candidate who proves their interests and capabilities in the seasonal position role.
