Teacher of the Blind [Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&M)] Needed in Tacoma, WA :

ProCare Therapy is working with a school district located in Tacoma, WA that is looking to hire an Teacher of the Blind, or Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&M) for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year with the opportunity to renew for the following school year.

The O&M Specialist works within a school setting, supporting students with visual impairments by teaching them the skills necessary for safe and efficient travel in various environments. This includes providing individualized instruction, collaborating with educators and families, and contributing to the development of educational plans.

Responsibilities :

  • Conduct functional vision assessments and O&M evaluations to determine students' needs.
  • Develop individualized O&M goals based on assessment results, considering the student's current and future environments.
  • Provide direct instruction in orientation and mobility techniques, such as cane use, sighted guide techniques, and independent travel skills.
  • Teach students to use residual vision and other senses to navigate their surroundings.
  • Instruct students in the use of O&M-related technology and adaptive equipment (e.g., GPS devices, electronic travel aids).
  • Work closely with teachers, special education staff, school administrators, and families to integrate O&M skills into the students daily routine and educational program.

    • Requirements :

  • Masters degree in Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, or a related field)
  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist
  • AVCREP National Certification
  • Previous school experience preferred
