VISION FOR POSITION

The Special Education Due Process Coordinator is a special education licensed teacher whose responsibility is to design, monitor, and coordinate LEA procedures, and assure that these procedures comply with state and federal regulations with regard to special education services for children with disabilities.

The program coordinator will function as a mentor/coach to other teachers.

POSITION FUNCTIONS

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities generally relate to facilitating special education program activities at the campus including:

  • Provide mentoring to Special Services staff in learning the necessary skills for due process rules and regulations and oversee the timelines and completion of due process documents.
  • Works with families to understand due process regulations and service delivery within the district.
  • Assist in coordination of timelines, deadlines, and meetings for the Special Education team
  • Write IEPs in collaboration with Special Ed Case Managers
  • Attend IEP meetings for note keeping
  • Develop evaluation plans and use assessment tools to determine student eligibility for specialized education.
  • Summarize evaluations for Special Education
  • Prepare and lead evaluation results meetings
  • Monitor Due Process Timelines
  • Coordinate due process procedures during weekly Due Process Meetings with teachers and service providers.
  • Maintain effective and efficient student records.
  • Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.
  • Serve as a day-to-day resource for the Special Education staff in the building
  • The program coordinator may coordinate program planning, evaluation and implementation, in-service training and curriculum development, and provide consultative support to teaching staff.
  • Ensure MCA and district testing accommodations are provided
  • Help mediate differences between parents and the LEA if necessary
  • Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students (including student data), parents, peers, administration and community.
  • Ensure that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, administration and community.
  • Attend relevant workshops, seminars committee meetings, and staff professional development as required.
  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as (but not limited to): meeting deadlines including mandated due process timelines, honoring schedules, coordinating with other staff.
  • Perform additional duties as determined by the Director of Special Education

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong leadership skills in facilitating group processes and team building.
  • Communication skills in a variety of settings and experiences.
  • Knowledge and skills in due process compliance and accountability.
  • Knowledge and skills in program assessment, design, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Understanding of special education trends and changes in IDEA as well as in federal and state rules and regulations.
  • Proficiency in use of software related to due process (Spedforms)
  • Excellent time management skills and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Tolerance for ambiguity, tenacity with follow-up and creativity in development of the individual building needs, while seeing the “larger” version of the district.
  • Ability to work with parents/families as well as students, staff, and support staff in problem-solving strategies.
  • Ability to engage in problem-solving and conflict resolutions.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage the volume of requests and responsibilities.
  • Leadership in supervising program and paraprofessionals.

EDUCATION AND REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education/Certification Requirements: A current PELSB-issued MN Teaching License in special education or related service area (school social worker, school psychologist, or speech-language pathologist) is required for this position.
