Position Purpose:
As a member of the therapy team, the Physical Therapist Assistant’s primary function is to provide physical therapy treatment under the direction and supervision of the Physical Therapist.
Qualifications:
- Licensed or eligible for licensure by the State of Illinois under the Illinois Physical Therapy Practice Act.
- Member or eligible for membership in the APTA preferred.
- General knowledge and therapy skill to perform the evaluation and treatment of a wide variety of conditions; and ages from neonates, pediatrics, young adults, and adults to geriatrics.
- Current certification in CPR and other service line specific competencies.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform a thorough client/patient chart review to acquire an understanding of the general health status, level of impairment, functional limitations and disability.
- Acknowledge an understanding of the implications of the diagnosis, health status, level of impairment, functional limitations and disability with regard to the client’s/patient’s physical activity level.
- Accept responsibility for the care and safety of the client/patient during treatment.
- Initiate client/patient treatment independently with/without specific instructions.
- Use treatment methods and procedures within the scope of Physical Therapy Practice Guidelines.
- Acknowledge an awareness of the treatment implications and contraindications of the client’s/patient’s
medical status and current medication level and seek clarification, as needed.
- Understand the chronicity and severity of the current problem and the possibility of multi-system, multi-site involvement or preexisting conditions.
- Consider the current level of impairment and functional limitations with regard to the client’s/patient’s
therapy goals, their living environment, potential discharge destination and social supports.

- Follow agency and facility policies and procedures regarding professional conduct, dress code, promptness and adherence to work schedules.
- Use time efficiently and effectively, complete tasks in a timely manner and efficiently manage a caseload.
- Attend required educational offerings, such as safety, standards compliance, organizational policy, etc.
- Attend required meetings on time and actively participate in a positive manner.
- Relate effectively and professionally with the supervisor and constructively receive praise and criticism.
- Establish a professional rapport with clients/patients, family members, staff and colleagues using tact and diplomacy in difficult or stressful times.

- Follow established chain of command when dealing with identified problems, issues or concerns.
