- Operate safety equipment, and use safe work habits.
- Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
- Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.
- Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind and/or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
- Detect faulty operation of equipment and/or defective materials, and notify supervisors.
- Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding.
- Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
- Examine work pieces for defects, and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
- Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required.
- Minimum one (1) year work related skill, knowledge, and hands on experience or vocational training preferred, but not required.
- Must stay in position for at least two (2) years depending on prior experience before promoting to Welder II.
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
- Sensitive to confidential information.
- Must work independently and as a member of team.
- Able to read, speak and write English.
- Strong physical and mental health to maintain demanding workload.
- Able to work under stressful conditions at times.
- Climbing - able to go up and down stairs.
- Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
- Able to wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, hard hats when needed, including welding safety equipment.
- Position will consistently dictate 40 - 60 hours per week with frequent overtime demands based on the workload requirements.
- Position will require some (6) six day weeks when workload demands, with time off scheduled per current workload and other staff availability.
