What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Advocate position at Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault?
Under the supervision of the Advocacy Coordinator:
- Provide legal advocacy, crisis intervention and support services to clients (50%)
- Provide community education and outreach to a variety of community agencies, schools, and groups (25%)
- Build relationships with youth-serving agencies within Northeastern Minnesota region (15%)
- Perform other related duties as assigned (10%)
Legal Advocacy, Crisis intervention and support services to clients (50%)
- Provide direct services to clients with particular emphasis on youth and those who have experienced or are at-risk for trafficking and/or exploitation
- Provide legal advocacy services including accompaniment to forensic interviews, interviews with law enforcement and prosecution, and any scheduled court hearings
- Assist with protective and/or other civil orders and accompany clients to hearings
- Refer clients to appropriate internal and/or external professionals as necessary with particular attention to the Safe Harbor Network and youth-serving agencies in our region
- Ensure that cultural needs and beliefs are considered when providing advocacy
- Serve as a point of contact for on-call advocates and local hospitals during evening and weekend hours, on a rotating basis
- Support victim-survivors during their sexual assault exam in local emergency departments
- Document client contacts in electronic database for continuity of services and aggregate data for reporting de-identified information to funders
Education and outreach to community agencies, schools, and groups (25%)
- Facilitate support groups at agencies that serve youth in collaboration with local agencies and youth serving programs
- Provide presentations about PAVSA services and Safe Harbor-related information in local middle and high schools
- Provide community education and awareness sessions to agencies and community groups on topics related to the needs of youth and those at risk for trafficking and/or exploitation
Build relationships with youth-serving agencies within Northeastern Minnesota region (15%)
- Participate in monthly First Witness Multidisciplinary Team meetings
- Participate in monthly Saint Louis County Safe Harbor Multidisciplinary Team meetings
- Participate in quarterly MN Department of Health (MDH) Supportive Services and Human Trafficking Prevention and Response Network Quarterly meetings
- Partner with the Regional Navigator to provide information to the community about trafficking and exploitation and to engage the public and stakeholders in prevention efforts
- Provide input into implementation of the No Wrong Door model and Safe Harbor protocols
- Participate in MDH Safe Harbor trainings
Other related work duties (10%)
- Serve as a representative of PAVSA at community and professional meetings as needed
- Participate in PAVSA’s Volunteer Advocacy training as needed
- Participate in annual fundraising events
- Flexibility for the potential to work some evening and weekend hours
- Must be able to sit in a stationary position or stand for prolonged periods of time (75%)
- Position is based out of an office in downtown Duluth but must be able to travel around the Duluth area to meet with clients
- Must have access to reliable transportation
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a copy machine, and computer printer.
- Must be able to complete a 40-hour training on sexual assault upon hire
- Experience working with people who have experienced trauma and those from a variety of identities, cultures, and backgrounds including BIPOC and LGBTQ2SA youth
- Experience facilitating or co-facilitating groups
- Comfort with public speaking and effective communication skills
- Good listening skills
- Ability to work individually and as part of a team
- College degree or equivalent life experience

- $22.00/hour, 40 hours per week; Office Hours are 8:30 - 4:30 Monday through Friday
