Progressive Rail Inc. is a short-line freight railroad that provides cost-effective shipping and transloading options to over 300 customers across a wide variety of industries. Our main office is headquartered in Lakeville, MN, with several other owned and operating railway locations across multiple states.

Progressive Rail, Inc. is looking to add a Locomotive Diesel Mechanic to our team! This individual will work at our Lakeville, MN AND Chippewa Falls, WI locations.

Primary Purpose and Essential Functions:

Inspects services and maintains diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations, diagnoses diesel engine malfunctions and makes indicated repairs using hand tools, measuring instruments, and sometimes machine tools. May assemble, repair, and fabricate metal parts operating mechanical equipment. May be required to qualify as a shop service locomotive engineer in accordance with FRA standards. This position is also responsible for maintenance of track infrastructure, including constructing, inspecting and repairing track, and other railroad properties and facilities. Operation of the equipment used in these tasks and in some cases maintenance of equipment. The transportation of the crew and the equipment to and from jobsite location.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performs daily (24 hour) locomotive inspection, including air brake cleaning and testing, in accordance with FRA regulations and at other intervals in accordance with company policy.
  • Performs periodic service on locomotives in accordance with company policy that includes: changing oil, turbo inspection, fueling, changing engine air and air compressor filters and greasing couplings, fittings, traction motor gears, electrical testing and repair, and fuel linkage.
  • Replaces locomotive and diesel engine components including wheels or trucks, traction motors, springs, couplers, draft gear assembly, gear cases and cylinder assemblies, heating equipment.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions in diesel engines, air equipment, trucks, or other components in order to determine nature of problem and needed repair or replacement.
  • Performs daily service of locomotive units: fuels, waters, lubricates and oils; wipes down and cleans unit/windows; checks supply and drinking water Performs periodic and annual inspections and understands FRA regulations pertaining to inspections.
  • Communicate effectively with Management and other Team Members to keep apprised of any delays or discrepancies concerning track repair.
  • Repair and rebuild railroad track.
  • Ability to use power and non-power hand tools as necessary.
  • Lift and carry track material, cut brush, trees and vegetation, and clear the right-of-way of litter.
  • Must comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures including wearing PPE, responding to safety concerns and judgement to take appropriate action.

Physical Demands:

  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions; work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes; climb ladders and on/off & top of equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50-80 lbs. for an extended duration. Must be able to regularly exert up to 125 pounds of force.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, twist, kneel, or squat for large portions of the day.
  • Must be able to see well enough to read gauges, precision measuring instruments, schematics, maintenance manuals.
  • Must be able to reach with arms and hands to perform inspections, maintenance, and repair duties.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2 years of related or equivalent experience required.
  • Experience working with heavy equipment preferred; Able to operate forklift and bobcat (loader)
  • Knowledgeable in the handling of hazardous and non-hazardous waste products preferred but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. CDL preferred but not mandatory.
  • Willing to submit to a background and driving investigation, as well as a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.

Pay: $55,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
