Job Summary:
Reporting to the CEO, the Chief Philanthropy and External Affairs Officer serves as a key leadership team member and provides strategic leadership for PPL’s philanthropy and external relations efforts including fundraising, communication, and donor engagement. This role is results-driven with an understanding of the local community and the business environment. It is responsible for developing and executing innovative fundraising models, deepening donor engagement, and strengthening PPL’s visibility among key stakeholders, including media, corporate partners, government, and the broader communities. The Chief Philanthropy and External Affairs Officer builds and leads a diverse team that enables PPL to succeed while ensuring their work is aligned with PPL’s mission and strategy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
Philanthropy Strategy and Fundraising Leadership:
- Lead the development and execution of PPL’s philanthropy strategy by establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to drive sustainable growth and operational success.
- Implement innovative fundraising models and donor engagement strategies to maximize revenue generation.
- Align fundraising priorities with appropriate channels and audience-based strategies to ensure success.
- Support and partner with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and board members on all major fundraising and resource development initiatives and relationship management with key stakeholders (e.g., donors, foundations, corporations, consultants, and coalitions).
- Partner with programming staff to ensure philanthropic efforts directly contribute to and align with PPL’s mission.
- Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to develop and implement PPL’s annual financial strategy and resource allocation. Support the capitalization of PPL’s Financial Sustainability Fund.
External Affairs and Grant Management:
- In partnership with CEO, COO, and CPO develop and deliver an external affairs strategy that enhances PPL’s reputation and influence in policy, government relations, and corporate partnerships.
- Actively work with the CEO and senior staff to enhance and implement PPL’s comprehensive development strategy, including major gifts, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, individual and government funding, and special events, etc.
- Act as an external spokesperson for the organization, as appropriate.
- Identify and cultivate relationships with strategic external partners, including private and private sectors leaders, to enhance philanthropic and programmatic opportunities.
- Monitor and ensure alignment between PPL’s external communications and its advocacy efforts to strengthen brand visibility.
- Support marketing research and data collection to keep abreast of opportunities and challenges that build a competitive edge.
- Have primary responsibility for the execution of all funding proposals; lead the development team in writing and archiving of all proposals with a long-term relationship-management approach; implement an effective prospect research system.
Communications and Brand Positioning:
- Lead and develop messaging and position strategy development to optimize fundraising and advocacy efforts.
- Oversee the creation of high impact donor communication materials including case statements, reports, and digital content.
- Create and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance PPL’s brand identity, broaden awareness of its programs and priorities, and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholders.
- Lead executive communication strategies, including crisis communication, talking points, speeches, op-eds, for leadership speaking engagements in philanthropy, policy, media, and other industry settings.
Donor and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Guide the development and implementation of a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with individual donors.
- Design and lead a major and planned giving program to secure vitally needed financial support; successfully identify, manage and nurture vibrant gifting sources to close significant major gifts.
- Design and implement relationship management strategies for high-value donors, corporate partners, and institutional funders.
- Develop and implements structured engagement framework that aligns fundraising, communications, and program impact storytelling.
- Lead, mentor, and supervise Fundraising, Communications, Data Analysis and Evaluation and PPL’s Volunteer staff and functions.
- Work closely with PPL’s highest-level donors and prospects including Board Members. Establish programs primarily focused on major and planned gifts.
- Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders.
- Manage paid and pro bono consulting relationships as appropriate.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position provides leadership to the Development and External Relations Team and has multiple direct reports.
- Fosters healthy working relationships and organizational tone within the team and across PPL
- Serve as a member of PPL’s Executive Management Team.
- Supports and promotes PPL’s mission and race equity work.
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in non-profit management, business or human services discipline, required; Graduate Degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years progressively responsible positions in fundraising, development and external relations for large non-profit organizations.
- Proven track record of developing and implementing high-impact fundraising strategies.
- Strong background in leading, developing, and managing staff with a demonstrated track record of inspiring teams and holding them accountable for results.
- Excellent communications skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
- Demonstrated skill and comfort in building relationships with board members, major donors, corporate giving managers, and government and community agency leaders.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community.
- Superior management skills, including the ability to advocate for and manage to budget priorities.
Work Environment:
This role is based in-person out of PPL's administrative office, with flexibility to work remotely on as as needed basis, as long as organization needs are met, and team collaboration is maintained
Salary:$185,000-$200,000/year, DOQ
