Work Schedule: Part-time, Sat - Sun, 24 hours a week, 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Full-time, Mon-Fri 35 Hours a Week 11:00 am -7:00 pm
SUMMARY:
The kitchen aide/cook is responsible for the preparation and serving of meals and snacks for the clients of our Drop-In Center. The kitchen aide/cook is also responsible for menu planning based on accepted nutritional guidelines and monitoring food safety and security.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the kitchen and food service areas. Including monitoring purchased and donated foods for safety and wholesomeness, monitor temperature on all kitchen equipment, and ensures cleaning procedures are being followed.
- Responsible for menu planning based on accepted nutritional guidelines.
- Responsible for securing food for each meal, either by ordering and preparing the food to be served or by assembling donated food or a combination of both.
- Responsible for safe food storage practices including the monitoring of expiration dates.
- Responsible for safety precautions in the kitchen including knife storage, floor slippage prevention, burn prevention, and with the Chief of Safety and Operations the maintenance of first aid equipment and fire extinguishers. Ensure safe storage of cleaning materials away from food prep areas and responsible for the fire safety of the kitchen.
- Responsible for the safe removal of kitchen waste and recyclable items.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED:
- HS Diploma/GED with at least 6 months to 1-year kitchen/cook experience working in the food services industry and/or with the homeless population needed.
- NYC Food Handlers Certification required.
- Experience with food preparation, ranging for up to 50-75 people at a time.
- Knowledge of NYDOH nutritional guidelines and regulations for food preparation.
- Understanding of health and safety rules in a kitchen needed.
- Must have exceptional communication skills both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups regarding complex and sensitive issues and regulations.
