What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Locating Technician position at Project Mutual Telephone (PMT)?
General Summary:
The Cable Locating Technician will be responsible for the identifying and marking of buried COAX, Copper, and Fiber Optic Cable by referencing utility prints and using industry specific locating equipment. The candidate must be flexible to work in all types of terrain and weather conditions, able to succeed under stressful situations, and conduct him/herself in a professional manner at all times. The candidate must also be self-motivated to work independently and demonstrate good time management skills to plan and accomplish the assigned work load as required.
Essential Job Functions Include, but are not limited to:
- Read and understand utility maps, prints, and aerial imagery to assist with the identification of underground facilities; COAX, Copper, and Fiber Optic Cables of all sizes
- Prioritize daily work activities by reviewing all locate requests to determine travel route and timelines, complete tasks accurately and on time
- Operate handheld tools and detection equipment in the designed manner
- Periodically remove and replace manhole lids, hand hole lids, and pedestal covers. Slide/move up to 250 lbs for manhole and hand hole lids
- Ability to work in all types of terrain and hazards (grass, gravel, ditches, etc.), all types of environments (construction sites, highways, industrial sites, private property, etc.), and all types of weather conditions
- Drive safely, extensively, and get in-and-out of vehicle repeatedly, walking several miles each day
- Mark the location of underground facilities on roadways, private property, and other locations as appropriate using required spray paints and/or flags
- Accurately, and consistently, wear safety gear and properly operate provided safety equipment
- Daily contact with utility managers, crews, homeowners, and contractors discussing locate issues
- Review existing and incoming data for accurate, up to date, quality, and completeness
Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes :
- Must have a valid Idaho driver’s license, drive extensively safely and get in-and-out repeatedly
- Ability to communicate with customers, employees, and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner in a diverse and stressful environment
- Ability to establish and maintain strong, professional working relationships with contractors, municipalities, and customers
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work within a team environment
- Skill with Time Management
- Complete and document work activities using a personal computer and complete Trouble Tickets on a timely basis
Education and Experience :
- Utility construction and/or electrical technology background (or training) preferred, however, PMT will train the right candidate who exhibits the ability, aptitude, and desire to learn the profession
- Ability to have and maintain a clean driving record
