Position Overview
We are seeking a part-time Marine Science Maintenance Technician to join our summer camp staff. The summer camp staff provides eight weeks of residential and day camp programs to 490 campers from late June thru mid August. The Marine Science Maintenance Technician will support day-to-day operations of our camp programs by caring for marine animals and aquaria as well as basic maintenance of scientific equipment and vessels used in camp operations.

Job Description
The Marine Science Maintenance Technician performs functions that support Summer Camp Directors and Counselors. Reporting to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the Marine Science Maintenance Technician’s primary responsibilities include the maintenance of aquaria and feeding of marine animals. Additional responsibilities include basic maintenance of science equipment and vessels used in camp programs. This position requires the ability to work successfully within a team environment and strong organizational skills as well as attention to detail.
This is an on site position that requires in person work at our Groton, CT facility.
Responsibilities
- Inspect and maintain aquaria and associated life support equipment including cleaning, calibration, and documentation of tasks performed.
- Care for marine animals that live in the aquaria including feeding.
- Monitor water quality in aquaria including testing and documentation of water quality, performing water changes, and other adjustments as needed with approval of supervisor to maintain ideal parameters for marine animal life support.
- Inspect and maintain science equipment used for summer camp programs as directed by the supervisor.
- Perform basic vessel maintenance including wash downs, outboard engine flushing with fresh water, and hull preservation.
- Provide additional support as assigned, including set-up of science equipment and materials for lab programs, pre- and post- operational checks of small boats, and organizing and maintaining equipment and supplies used for aquaria, science equipment, and vessel maintenance.
Education and Work Experience
- 1yearrelevant work experience is preferred.
- There is no formal education requirement for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of proper functioning, operation and maintenance of fresh and saltwater aquaria and installed equipment.
- Knowledge of inspection techniques for aquaria and associated equipment.
- Knowledge of and ability to feed living marine animals.
- Ability to perform basic cleaning and preventative maintenance functions to preserve vessels and scientific equipment exposed to marine environmental conditions.
- Ability to follow safety rules and regulations and keep work areas neat, clean and organized.
- Ability to manage tools, spare parts and equipment in an organized and efficient manner.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to organize and express thoughts and ideas through oral, written, and email communications.
- Work environment requires the ability to work both indoors and outdoors in a range of conditions including heat, cold, wet, humid, and dry conditions.
- Ability to learn quickly; ability to work independently and effectively with minimum supervision, and to be self-motivated and resourceful.
- Ability to perform physical tasks in indoor and outdoor environments to clean boats and maintain both aquaria and scientific equipment, may be exposed to inclement weather.
- High degree of accuracy, efficiency, and reliability.
- Ability to work as a gracious and supportive team player.
What We Offer
- Up to 24 hours per week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, beginning June 16, 2025 through August 15, 2025.
