Program Description

Fort Washington Men’s Shelter is an emergency men’s shelter which helps 200 individuals with mental health diagnosis and substance use histories work towards health, sobriety, and, ultimately, permanent housing and employment. In addition to lodging and three meals a day, clients receive comprehensive case management services, plus an array of on-site mental health services related and health care services provided by different programs.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The essential duties of the Behavioral Engagement Coordinator include but are not limited to the following activities:

• Act as a liaison between Fort Washington Men’s Shelter, NYPD, DHSPD, DHS, some aspects of Community Government and other local Agencies to reduce loitering on the neighborhood streets.
• Supervises a team of 3 Behavioral Engagement Specialists who conduct community walk-throughs and engage current Fort Washington Men’s Shelter clients about loitering on the neighboring streets and parks.
• Coordinates communication with street outreach teams to provide up to date information on known street homeless individuals.
• Supports team of Behavioral Engagement Specialists which enforces adherence to the FWMS Good Neighbor Policy by issuing verbal and written warnings reminding clients of their compliance responsibilities regarding the facility policies.
• Monitors the engagement efforts of the ES Team and provides updates on the services provided at FWMS and encourage participation in the offered on-site recreational activities.
• Tracks and monitors the engagement efforts of the ES team related to communicating with challenging clients and increasing participation rates in service planning and housing search processes.
• Ensures that the ES team maintains accurate and up to date written client documentation as required by and in accordance with city and state oversight agency guidelines.
• Act as a “Champion” for the overdose prevention program which includes providing ongoing overdose prevention trainings to clients and staff and engaging clients after overdose.
• Complete monthly Overdose prevention reporting for DOH, DHMH and DHS.
• Participates and leads regular trainings and monthly staff meetings.
• Communicates with the Social Services team to discuss client concerns.
• Participates in case conferences in response to client complaints, using conflict resolution techniques to amicably resolve issues.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Social Services, Assistant Director or Program Director
• Tracks and provides all critical incident follow ups and enters service referrals in CARES.
• Monitors a caseload of 2-3 client, at times it may be more.
  
  

Qualifications

• While performing the duties of this position, the Behavioral Engagement Coordinator must be able to ambulate the 2 flights of stairs to navigate the facility in order to engage the 200 clients. Furthermore, the Behavioral Engagement Coordinator must stand to talk to clients and staff, sit for extended periods of time at the computer, and reach or squat to get records from the files.
• Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of two years’ experience in human services, consulting, evaluation, homeless services, quality assurance, or related field.
• Experience working with adults with mental health and/or substance use issues, preferably in homeless shelters or supportive housing.
• Knowledge in Harm Reduction
• Ability to become a Certified Trainer in Opioid Overdose Prevention
• Exceptionally strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as an ability to work effectively with others.
• Attention to detail, with exceptional analytical, organizational, communication and project management skills.
• Strong quantitative and Microsoft Excel skills.
  
  

Qualifications

• Ability to work cooperatively with peers and other staff in order to serve the needs of the clients as effectively as possible.
• An ability to work independently and to adjust one’s schedule to accommodate the needs of the programs.
• An ability to interface with clients as well as all levels of staff.
• Excellent oral, writing, and listening skills.
• Knowledge of case management software as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
• Bilingual or multilingual a plus.
