Position overview:
The Wastewater Treatment Operator would be responsible for overseeing the operations and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant to ensure the safe, efficient and economical treatment of wastewater. This position will execute the policies and assignments received from corporate management, compliance requirements defined by state & federal regulating agencies, and plant management. To be successful, the Wastewater Operator requires a high degree of independent judgment in accomplishing the work and developing continuous improvement programs.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Operates and maintains wastewater treatment systems including wastewater treatment process, sewer lift stations, combined sewer overflow facilities that control the flow and processing of wastewater, sludge.
- Tracks key real-time monitoring and control of various process using available SCADA or local controls systems.
- Maintain treatment process to meet Effluent limits mandated by NPDES permits or other local, state, or federal regulations.
- Monitors the performance of all equipment, gauges, meters, and charts in the treatment plant and pumping stations; records statistical data concerning plant operations; charts lab test results for trend analysis and maintains accurate records of analyses and test results; evaluates data and documents as required.
- Assists with operating and repairs, and replaces equipment as necessary including, but not limited to, grit collectors, clarifiers, digesters, aeration tanks, blowers, filter presses, generators, gauges, meters, pumps, valves, lift stations, combined sewer overflow facilities and process controls equipment.
- Analyzes primary and secondary sludge, wastewater influent, effluent samples to provide data for the efficient operation of the wastewater treatment plant.
- Collects samples and identifies concentrations of chemical, physical or biological characteristics of wastewater required in accordance with local, state and federal requirements; gathers and tests wastewater samples for plant operational control as required to meet regulatory requirements.
Required Education, Knowledge and Skills:
- Must have a minimum of California Certified Wastewater Treatment Grade 2, California Certified Water Treatment 2, California Certified Water Distribution 1.
- Two years of experience operating at wastewater treatment plant.
- Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in wastewater collection and treatment systems; working knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operation and maintenance activities.
- Skilled in operation of the tools and equipment of the trade to include but not limited to: pumps, gauges, hand/power tools, lab sampling equipment, chlorinators, mixers, detection devices, etc.
- Knowledge of materials for plumbing such as ductile, iron, copper, cast iron, plastic, steel, PVC, HDPE and ABS.
- Knowledge of maintenance materials such as filters, lubricants, degreasers, seals, belts, bearings and universal joints.
- Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), interpret blueprints or operation/maintenance manuals.
- Ability to work with all types of chemicals used in wastewater treatment; soda ash, chlorine, polymer, alum, etc.
- Ability to work safely; ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion: ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Work in all types of weather conditions (snow, rain, heat, cold).
