What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dosimetrist I - Medical Physics - Per Diem - Days position at ProMedica?
Provides calculations and computerized distributions of radiation doses to patients undergoing radiotherapy at Flower Hospital and associated healthcare facilities.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
*All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise*
1. Designs treatment plans by means of computer and/or manual computation that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose with the Radiation Oncologist’s prescription, to a defined tumor volume. Select appropriate data for specific treatment machine and generate accurate treatment plans in an efficient manner.
2. Consider dose limiting structures in the design of treatment plans and document dose in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist’s prescription. Dose limiting structures such as cord and kidney must be identified where appropriate and recorded for current and previous treatments.
3. Coordinate treatment simulations and tumor localization on dedicated devices, including computed tomography and MRI, when indicated, for radiation therapy treatment planning. Collaborates with simulation therapist and CT/MRI technologist on acquiring necessary information.
4. Supervises and/or assists in the planning of the fabrication of compensating filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam modifying devices. For 3-D planning, generate templates for blocks accurately and efficiently.
5. Supervise the technology staff in the implementation of the treatment plan including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement and any treatment variable associated with treatment planning implementation. Assists therapists in set-ups when questions arise about implementation of treatment plans.
6. Perform calculations for the delivery of prescribed dose, and subsequent documentation in patient files and verification of the mathematical accuracy of all calculation using a system established by the Medical Physicist.
7. Provide physics and technical support to the Medical Physicist in radiation protection, qualitative and quantitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance of the radiation therapy equipment.
8. Assists in the application of specific methods of dosimetry including ion chamber, TLD or film measurements as directed by the Medical Physicist. Is alert to conditions that may require special dosimetry and perform the necessary measurements for review by the physicist.
9. Assist in intracavitary and interstitial sealed source procedures and in the subsequent manual and/or computer calculation of the dose distributions of these treatment procedures. Participates in the ordering of the sources, when necessary, per physician prescription. Participates in preplanning for physician’s approval. Follows approved procedures for loading sources in cart, transporting to patient’s room, survey room, posting notices and returning sources to storage after treatment.
