Under direct supervision of the WIC Coordinator, the WIC Nutritionist is responsible for the assessment of the WIC eligibility of applicants, direct implementation of nutrition education components, participant-centered nutrition services and support to WIC clients. The WIC Nutritionist will also serve as the Breastfeeding Expert and Trainer.
Pays : $42.03 per hour
KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Nutritionist
Develop and implement individual care plans (ICPs) and oversee high risk care to all participants.
Coordinate nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support, that is responsive.
to the identified needs / interests of each high-risk participant.
Refer high-risk participants to other health-related and social services, as necessary.
Track high-risk participants' progress in improving their health and document for outcomes.
Ensure the efficient flow of the assessment and education processes.
Provide leadership in planning, conducting, and evaluating participant-centered nutrition services.
Provide leadership and assist in orienting, training and mentoring new local agency (LA) staff.
Provide leadership in developing, conducting, and evaluating nutrition training for LA staff in nutrition education topics.
Completes all mandatory annual trainings as deemed necessary by LCDS and NYSDOH.
Maintains HIPAA standards and regards all medical or healthcare information.
Other duties as assigned.
Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE)
Accept referrals for complex breastfeeding situations.
Assess and counsel breastfeeding dyads needing specialized lactation expertise.
Assess for and may issue breastfeeding aids including nipple shields, supplemental nursing systems, and breast pumps.
Keep accurate documentation of all breastfeeding contacts.
Keep current with up to date, evidenced based practices pertaining to breastfeeding.
Provide timely follow-up breastfeeding support and referrals.
Collaborate and refer to the health care provider when a participant's health is of concern.
Promote breastfeeding to the community.
REQUIREMENTS : Nutritionist
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD / RDN) OR
Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree in Nutrition from an accredited college or university
Meets the NYS WIC qualifications for a CPA per WPM 1460
Has, at minimum, 1 year of experience in counseling breastfeeding dyads
Is a physician or nutritionist (Masters or bachelor's degree in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Home economics with emphasis in Nutrition), IBCLC, dietitian, registered nurse, physician's assistant. If not one of the professions listed above, they must have completed a minimum of 8 college courses in the Health Sciences
International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential or Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) certification is preferred.
Within the first year of hire, the DBE must attend a 40-hour lactation counseling course and other state-designated breastfeeding trainings.
Upon hire, the DBE must complete the FNS competency-based training for WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum (levels 1-4) within a reasonable timeframe, within 6 months is preferred – when available
As competencies are obtained from the training curriculum and the 40-hour lactation course is completed, the DBE can counsel on more complex breastfeeding situation.
