They understand that cultivating a diverse and equitable organizational culture is essential for enhancing the impact they have within underrepresented communities.The Chief Financial Officer will be the key leader responsible for overseeing all financial operations at SMAA. Reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO will collaborate closely with the leadership team and the Board of Directors to create and implement strategic initiatives across the organization. As a vital member of SMAA's leadership team, the CFO will guide and optimize the finance and administrative framework to adapt to the changing landscape of a dynamic and results-oriented organization, driving significant growth over the next 3 to 5 years.The CFO will ensure that SMAA has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The CFO will oversee all day-to-day finance operations and support all compliance and recognition for government (Federal and State) grants and private foundation grants. The CFO manages a team of three and has responsibility for accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants management. ResponsibilitiesFinancial ManagementAnalyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; oversee all financial, project / program and grants accountingOversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in partnership with the leadership teamOversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirementsMaintain internal controls and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expendituresCoordinate audits. Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functionsBusiness PlanningDevelop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plansManage organizational cash flow and forecasting by working in partnership with managers. Continuously collaborate with senior leadership to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and strengthen current finance systems to support program operationsManage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelinesRemain up-to-date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations. Keep the Finance Committee up to date regarding issues and trends in financial operating models and deliveryUpdate and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the accounting department’s overall policy and procedure manualLeadership & CommunicationsEffectively communicate and present critical financial matters to the senior leadership team and the Board of DirectorsWork closely and transparently with all external partners including third-party vendors and consultantsAdminister and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status.Engage the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors to develop long-term financial plans and projectionsProvide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environmentGrants ManagementOversee robust grants management and fee-for-service reporting systems; ensure that the billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirementsEnsure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant / fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government and foundation grantsCoordinate and oversee contracts and grant agreements, and engage legal counsel as neededMaintain the integrity and compliance of governance policies and related documentsCreate and sustain productive vendor, banking and contractual relationships and serve as primary liaison with related third parties.Evaluate and oversee risk management and insurance issuesQualifications Minimum of a BA, ideally with a CPA / MBA or related degree7-10 years’ experience in financial managementA successful track record in setting prioritiesHighly organized, with strong time management skillsStrong analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills which allow for strategic data interpretation and sound decision-making versus simple reportingA multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environmentExcellent communication and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholdersSolid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investmentsAbility and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals and effectively collaborate with teammatesTrack record in grants management a plusExercise a high degree of integrity in managing confidential and sensitive informationIdeal candidate has experience in final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, and reporting and audit coordination for either an entire organization or significant program areaCompensation includes a salary ($100,000-115,000) and full benefits.Interested candidates should submit a resume and letter of interest to Mary Warren Libby, Director of Recruiting Services at ProSearch – mary@prosearchmaine.com.
