TITLE: Assistant Prosecuting Attorney – Appellate ($76,228-$123,600)
DEPARTMENT: Prosecutor’s Office
LOCATION:St. Joseph, Berrien County, Michigan – a beachfront community on the shore of Lake Michigan.
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the County’s Prosecuting Attorney and using a considerable degree of independent judgment, handles appellate and post-conviction matters on behalf of the People of the State of Michigan.
TYPICAL DUTIES
- Conducts research and prepares legal briefs and other pleadings for submission to trial courts, Court of Appeals, and Supreme Court.
- Reviews and responds to incoming pleadings in criminal appellate and post-conviction matters.
- Represents the People in oral argument in trial courts, Court of Appeals, and Supreme Court.
- Assists trial prosecutors through research assistance, legal training, and updates on relevant developments in the law.
- Maintains organized legal files in appellate and post-conviction cases.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Education: Graduation from accredited law school is required.
Experience: Prior experience is not necessary. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience. Benefits included upon starting date.
Position eligible for federal student loan forgiveness.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A member of the State Bar of Michigan. If awaiting bar results, applicant may be hired in pending passage of bar exam.
