The Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office is currently seeking a part-time Assistant Prosecuting Attorney (APA). Remote participation in most hearings (via Zoom) is an option for the right candidate.
Duties
The APA will be the lead attorney for all misdemeanor matters in the 97th District Court. Responsibilities will include conducting pretrial conferences, motion hearings, sentencings, and trials, as well as preliminary hearings in District Court for most felonies, and any other duties assigned by the Prosecuting Attorney.
Hours/Schedule
Total time per week will generally not exceed 15-20 hours. This includes court (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 8:30AM – Noon), and any time needed to prepare files. Applicants must be available for jury trials scheduled on Wednesdays, 8AM – 5PM.
Coverage will be available for vacations and other time off as-needed.
Remote Participation
The Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office uses the Karpel case management system, allowing for remote work using digital files. Qualified candidates may be considered for remote work, at the discretion of the Prosecuting Attorney and 97th District Court. Contested hearings, such as trials, would require an in-person attendance.
Requirements
Licensed attorney in good standing with State Bar of Michigan. Prior prosecution or criminal law experience preferred, but not required. Candidates must past background check, which may include a criminal history.
Compensation
$1500 per week (1099 contractual employee). No fringe benefits. The County of Houghton would cover annual State Bar of Michigan dues.
