Summary
The Saginaw County Prosecutor’s Office has an opening for an assistant prosecuting attorney. This is a fast-paced office that makes the days go by quick. Under the daily supervision of the Prosecutor and Chief Assistant Prosecutor, you will prosecute criminal cases including vertically prosecuting cases from investigation through trial. The office has 20 APAs, and has a strong team environment, which allows colleagues to brainstorm and help one another when needed.
Typical Job Duties
Interviews victims of crimes, complaints and law enforcement officials requesting warrants; determines appropriateness and authorizes warrants as deemed necessary.
Analyze police reports, case investigation reports, laboratory reports, witness statements and identification to authorize or deny prosecutor proceedings. Decides whether an accused is charged with a crime and/or whether charges are reduced or dropped.
Advises law enforcement officials within the county on legal matters related to investigations and procedures. Review / Draft Search Warrants. Assists police in field investigation when necessary or requested.
Handles assignments in all courts which includes: Probate, Circuit, District, and Juvenile Court. Prepares for trials and court proceedings by researching previous cases and applicable legislation; drafts briefs and legal memoranda in support of court arguments. Conducts criminal trials by introducing case, picking jury, presenting opening and closing arguments, examining and cross-examining witnesses, presenting evidence and arguing motions.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Graduate of an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Michigan. Experience handling felony criminal and/or misdemeanor cases preferred.
