Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney
Come work in beautiful Ludington, Michigan. The Prosecuting Attorney’s office is located inside the historic courthouse on Ludington Avenue just blocks away from Lake Michigan. This position offers the opportunity to appear in court on a regular basis on a wide variety of criminal matters.
The Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, in addition to the below listed duties, assists the Prosecuting Attorney in supervising and mentoring the assistant prosecuting attorney, managing support staff, and is responsible for maintaining the day-to-day operations of the office in the absence of the Prosecuting Attorney. Under the direction of the Prosecuting Attorney reviews investigations presented by law enforcement to determine appropriate charges, if any, and files complaints for warrant authorization. As an assistant prosecutor you will present criminal cases in the District and Circuit Court, as well as handle matters in the Juvenile Court. The position may also require appearances on Probate Court matters. Prosecutors are responsible for preparing and responding to criminal pleadings, conducting preliminary, evidentiary and mental health hearings. You will represent the People of the State of Michigan in pretrial matters, pleas, trials, sentencing and some appeals. Trial preparation and plea negotiations will require consultation with the victims of crimes, witnesses to the charged offenses, and members of law enforcement. This list is not inclusive of the total scope of the job functions to be performed. Duties may be added, deleted, or modified at any time by the Prosecuting Attorney.
Qualifications: Law degree from an accredited law school, some criminal law and litigation experience preferred but not required, licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Michigan.
