SUMMARY:
The Head Swim Team Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the swim team to include management of other Coaches and current swim technology, communication to members of the swim team and their parents / guardians, execution of all practices and meets. This is a stipend part time seasonal position.
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:
The Head Swim Team Coach reports to the Recreation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Must be able to demonstrate proper swim techniques to participants from in the water and on deck
- Provide instruction for assistant swim team coaches and swimmers during practices and meets as needed
- Execute safe and organized swim team practices and competitions
- Assist in programming and operating the timing system.
- Conduct parents meeting, communicate with parents/guardians on how their swimmer can succeed on the swim team and answer their questions throughout the season
- Supervise July 4th Parade community event
- Assist in organizing end-of-season party
- Prevent accidents through the enforcements of agency policies, rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the conduct of persons using the swimming facilities
- Know, enforce, and follow all pool rules and policies. Be consistent and polite in your enforcement
- Thoroughly complete all incidents and accident reports
- Maintain contact with the Recreation Supervisor as needed
Competitions should be organized in this manner:
One week or more before meet
- Head Coach contact opposing team coach
Friday prior to meet
- Head Coach contact parents, include: times, opponent, ask for more timers if needed, check to see if plans have changed and someone may not attend
- Assistant Coaches give Head Coach their line-up
Monday prior to meet
- Ask Supervisor to post pool closing on front door
- Head Coach verifies that Assistant Coach entered swimmers from both districts into current swim technology, Head Coach prints a back-up of the line up
Tuesday prior to meet
- Head Coach prints Heat sheet and Lane timer sheets and brings to practice for coaches to review
- Head Coach – assign 2 parent timers per lane (6 lanes) and a parent or staff to enter information into computer.
- Head Coach organizes clip board and timers for parent volunteers.
- All coaches – complete swimmers event slips with: swimmer’s name, event name, number of event and lane assignment
Day of meet
12 noon Hang flags
3:00pm Lifeguards help move pool chairs from behind starting blocks.
Lifeguards help move lifeguard chair #6 to the south side and space out other lifeguard chairs facing the pool.
Coaches and lifeguards set up starting blocks.
Lifeguards help set up 12 metal chairs (2 behind each starting block) for timers and 12 chairs for bullpen.
Pool Manager is stationed at computer to enter info in pool office
Lifeguards help put in lane lines.
3:30pm Team meeting – coaches give out index cards
3:45pm Warm-ups for Typhoons
4:15pm Warm-ups for opposing team
5:00pm Official announce the races & event with the bullhorn
Coaches and lifeguards tear down, clean-up, remove lane lines, flags and re-set lifeguard chairs.
Thursday after meet
Head Coach prints labels for ribbons
Friday after meet
All coaches attach labels to ribbons, collate and give to swimmerS
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Strong people and customer service skills
- A good understanding of the agency operations and organizational structure with strong attention to organization, accuracy and detail.
- Ability to communicate with other teams, agency staff, parents/guardians and swimmers
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to needs of swimmers as well as identifying potential safety hazards
- Abilities to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations
- Follow policies, and apply supervisory authority to correct problems.
- Maintain good work ethic and sportsmanship
PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- must work closely with assistant swim coaches and lifeguards
- must work well with the general public
- must work under supervision and direction of supervisors
- be responsible for the safety of the swim team
- may have to work under stressful situations during aquatic emergencies
- has to be able to make quick decisions to assure safety in and out of the pool
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- able to walk long distances (>800 yards) and stand for long periods of time (2-3 hours)
- some bending, kneeling and reaching items off floors and shelves
- lift and move storage boxes and other supplies up to 10lbs
- perform repetitive hand / arm movements when working on computer keyboard
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- will be exposed to outside weather conditions, which can include cold, rain and extreme heat
PAY STRUCTURE:
$3,500 stipend

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two years of swim team experience
- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
- CPR/AED required.
- Must have own transportation to travel to and from swim team “away” competition
