SUMMARY:
Swim Instructors are responsible for the instruction of swim lessons and the safety of participants.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The Swim Instructor reports to the Swim Lesson Coordinator for daily assignments and the Recreation Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
The Swim Instructor will not directly supervise any employees.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Be familiar with swim lesson levels/curriculum and use course materials effectively
- Provide instruction to varying ages
- Begin and end class on time, remain after class to answer participant and/or parent questions and clean up supplies
- Educate participants on proper technique and promote swimmer safety at all times
- Maintain accurate and neat progress cards, certificates, and attendance information
- Ensure all teaching areas are free of hazards and that materials and equipment returned to designated locations
- Remove hazards and report deficiencies to the Swim Lesson Coordinator immediately
- Communicate openly and in a positive manner with parents of participants to provide constructive feedback regarding student skills and progress
- Tend to accident or emergency situations in accordance with accident/incident protocols
- Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service
- Be aware of emergency action plans and be prepared to perform assigned role at all times
- Wear proper uniform while on duty
- Learn and follow all provisions of the Aquatic Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
- Perform other related pool duties as required by the Pool Manager or Recreation Supervisor
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Must be able to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time.
- Able to communicate tactfully and effectively with program participants and co-workers
- Ability to lead small group and individual swim lessons with varying ages
- Ability to complete and maintain swim lesson paperwork
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Set up of extra pool furniture and supplies as needed.
- Participate in pool activities as needed.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- The Swim Instructor has responsibility for the safety of the swim participants in the pool and on the pool deck.
- The Swim Instructors may have to work under stressful situations when first aid or CPR is required.
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- The Swim Instructor works in a summer climate.
- The Swim Instructor must be able to respond quickly and accurately.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
The Swim Instructor will be exposed to the weather conditions, which can include cold, rain, wind, and extreme heat.
COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS:
- The Swim Instructor must be able to follow directions from the supervisor.
- The Swim Instructor must be able to give and receive directions from co-workers.
- The Swim Instructor must use good safety awareness and judgment.
- The Swim Instructor must be aware of potential life-threatening conditions.
PAY RATES:
Starting at $16.00/hr

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must have CPR/AED, first aid certification, including written and practical skills.
- Prior experience as a swimmer (recreational or competitive) or swim lesson instructor preferred
- High school or college education in progress or completed
