What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Principal, Middle School Campus position at Prospect Hill Academy Charter School?
The Assistant Principal, in close collaboration with the Principal, is responsible for providing leadership in the areas of school culture, restorative practices, and curriculum & instructional practices & priorities. The Assistant Principal works diligently and strategically to ensure that all students are successful both academically and socio-emotionally.
Essential Functions:
Instructional Leadership
- Depending on the AP’s areas of experience or expertise, instructional leadership may be more focused on academic or social-emotional learning; Principal and AP will be equal collaborators in the work of supporting and implementing a robust system for monitoring student learning progress, identifying strengths and needs, and designing action steps.
- Provides effective professional learning, feedback, and support to all staff to ensure the design and implementation of engaging, inclusive, culturally responsive and appropriately rigorous instruction
- Collaborates with Principal in planning PD goals, calendar, and sessions
- Supports effective professional collaboration, including the effectiveness of collaborative planning and inquiry in support of student growth
- Engages in strong data-informed decision making in order to improve systems and practices, in service of student learning, and promotes a culture of ongoing collection and analysis of data (both qualitative and quantitative)
- Observes teachers in the classroom and gives feedback to teachers on instructional practices and classroom culture
- Provides on-going and targeted feedback to teachers on instructional delivery and practice
- Ensures that all staff receive effective, timely, and meaningful supervision and evaluation, including frequent informal and formal observations of practice, high-quality feedback, and a thorough year-end summative performance appraisal
- Supervision and Evaluation will be shared between Principal and AP, with decisions about who each supervises and evaluates made collaboratively
- In collaboration with the Principal, leads the development and implementation of a vibrant, healthy, and restorative school culture
- Organizes, develops, and supervises protocols for school building, including arrival and dismissal, lunch/recess, and transitions, and routinely monitors school building facilities including: hallways, restrooms, classrooms, lunch room, and special areas
- Recommends, plans, and supervise policies and procedures related to attendance, emergency preparedness, and student/staff safety
- Establishes and enforces high standards of student conduct; provides due process rights to students when responding to disciplinary situations; assigns Restorative Actions and discipline to students as needed
- Collaborates with Principal to establish and implement behavior response system and structures
- Collaborates with Principal to make disciplinary decisions and carry out discipline processes
- Fosters strong relationships among and between students, teachers, parents, and administrators
- Maintains, shares, and analyzes all disciplinary records and data; use data to improve disciplinary practices and procedures
- Communicates regularly and proactively with parents regarding student discipline and behavioral situations
- Works closely with counselors and teachers to develop individual preventive discipline plans and interventions for students who are at risk of academic, behavioral, or social-emotional issues
- Provides and maintains appropriate communication with families around behavior intervention plans and issues
- At least 5 years experience working in relevant grades; experience in urban public or charter school highly preferred
- Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree strongly preferred in education/education leadership
- Massachusetts licensure (or working towards licensure) as Principal/Assistant Principal
- Understanding and familiarity with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and the Common Core standards
- Knowledge of the relevant policies and procedures of the Massachusetts Department of Education

- Familiarity with Restorative Justice practices, and a willingness and interest in applying a restorative approach to classroom management and school culture

- Strong personal organizational and time-management skills; ability to multi-task and perform a range of instructional and administrative duties

- Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form with students, staff, and community members
- Fluency in Google Suites
