What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parks and Facilities Maintenance I/II position at Prospect Recreation & Park District?
GENERNAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled, and skilled labor involved in the maintenance and repair of parks, landscape areas, open spaces, and trails to assure these areas are safe, clean, functional, and aesthetically pleasing while following best management practices. The position also participates in snow and ice control activities; operates light to heavy park equipment; and may direct a crew of seasonal workers in the performance of varied duties. As a local government organization, Prospect Recreation & Park District is a special district that provides quality parks, trails and open space areas within the district boundaries. The District provides seven local park playgrounds, two horse arenas, two facilities for events, sports fields, outdoor exercise spaces, a natural open space with play features, two tennis courts, basketball, volleyball, horseshoe, bocce ball courts and several picnic shelters.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
PFM Technician I
Knowledge of:
Equipment and tools used in the maintenance and repair of parks and open spaces preferred.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices preferred.
Ability to:
- Learn operations and activities of a park maintenance program.
- Learn to interpret, explain, and enforce maintenance policies and procedures.
- Operate a variety of maintenance and repair equipment, which includes various hand and power tools and light-duty equipment, in a safe and effective manner requiring hand/eye and hand/foot coordination.
- Perform a variety of physically demanding work for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions including extreme heat and / or cold.
- Perform heavy manual labor requiring a full range of physical motions including standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting of objects weighing up to 50-pounds, twisting and turning, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects with hands and arms, and using hands to finger and control objects.
- Maintain and prepare athletic fields and horse arenas.
- Maintains lawns, shrubbery, and trees including planting, watering, mowing, trimming, edging, fertilizing, and weed and pest control.
- Performs snow removal and other related work as required.
- Perform work in high-use parks in a safe and effective manner.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- On-call work is required.
Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: One year of experience in the maintenance and restoration of parks preferred.
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Certificates and Licenses: Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license and driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the District’s insurance carrier. Employee must have First Aid/CPR certification, or be able to attain within six months of hire date.
PFM Technician II
In addition to the qualifications for Parks Technician I -
Knowledge of:
- General practices applied in turf maintenance and plant care.
- Operations and activities of a park maintenance program.
- Methods and techniques of repairing and maintaining parks and open spaces.
- Equipment, tools, and materials used in area of work assigned.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to:
- Perform park and facility maintenance and restoration work.
- Lead and oversee the work of seasonal staff.
- Interpret, explain, and enforce maintenance policies and procedures.
- Operate a variety of maintenance and repair equipment, including various hand and power tools and light and heavy-duty equipment, in a safe and effective manner requiring hand/eye and hand/foot coordination.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Use independent thought and decision-making.
- Prioritize items needing attention.
- Coordinate worksite operations for efficiency and safety.
- Recognize hazards.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- On-call work is required.
Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: 3 or more years of experience in parks maintenance preferred.
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Certificates and Licenses: Certified Playground Safety Inspector certification (CPSI) preferred or the ability to obtain within 6 months from hire date. Colorado Pesticide Applicator’s License in the turf and ornamental categories preferred or the ability to obtain within 6 months from hire date.

Pay: $19.00 - $31.00 per hour
