Primary Purpose:
Provide targeted instructional coaching and support to teachers working with Emergent Bilingual students. Build teacher capacity through job-embedded professional learning rooted in effective ESL instructional practices and analysis of student language acquisition data. Increase overall quality of instruction for Emergent Bilingual students and support their academic and linguistic growth by providing a targeted focus on teachers working to obtain their ESL certification.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with ESL supplemental
Master’s Degree in relevant field
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Extensive expertise in ESL instruction and sheltered instruction strategies
- Strong understanding of instructional coaching models and partnership principles
- Strong understanding of second language acquisition theory and practice
- Knowledge of federal and state requirements regarding Emergent Bilingual education
- Understanding of the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS)
- Ability to work within and provide support to Professional Learning Communities
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
- Experience applying adult learning theory and effective professional learning practices
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of assessment tools and strategies for measuring language acquisition
- Experience with data analysis and using data to inform instructional decisions
Experience:
Three (3) or more years of classroom teaching experience with Emergent Bilingual students
Five (5) or more years of ESL classroom teaching experience, preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Management
1. Collaboratively develop and deliver professional development focused on best practices for Emergent Bilingual instruction.
2. Provide one-on-one and small group instructional coaching to teachers on effective ESL strategies and sheltered instruction practices.
3. Support teachers with the implementation of linguistic accommodations across content areas.
4. Model effective teaching practices through co-teaching and demonstration lessons, including but not limited to ELLA and ESOL courses.
5. Contribute to the analysis of language proficiency data and planning appropriate supports.
6. Attend collaborative team meetings focused on Emergent Bilingual student success.
7. Mentor teachers as they obtain appropriate ESL certification for the purpose of improving ESL instruction to promote bilingualism/bi-literacy.
Communication
8. Create conditions that foster trusting relationships conducive to instructional coaching.
9. Establish and maintain professional relationships with teachers, administrators, and families of Emergent Bilingual students.
10. Serve as a liaison between campus staff and the Language Programs department.
Professional Growth and Development
11. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
12. Stay informed of current research and best practices in second language acquisition.
13. Participate in ongoing collaboration between Language Programs and other departments.
14. Attend and participate in meetings and serve on committees as required.
Other
15. Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
16. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
