Role Description
This is a full-time on-site role for a Fire Protection Engineer at Protection Development, Incorporated (PDI) in San Antonio, TX. The Fire Protection Engineer will be responsible for tasks such as designing fire suppression systems, ensuring fire safety standards compliance, and conducting life safety assessments. For the FPE position, the compensation range is $115,000 - $175,000 and the actual compensation will be subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, and skillset.
Here is what you would do:
The FPE will handle multiple projects at one time and the projects will vary in scope and type of project (office, residential, warehouse, industrial, etc.). Engineering and project management are the primary duties of this position. Daily tasks may include:
- Designing fire protection and notification systems such as automatic fire sprinkler, fire pump, fire water storage tank, and fire alarm. The design may include preparing the drawing files, editing specifications, or writing a narrative description of the requirements.
- Reviewing projects for compliance with ICC and NFPA codes and preparing a report of findings.
- Providing creative and code compliant (or equivalent) solutions to fit the needs of our clients.
- Performing site visits to observe and document building conditions and fire protection systems.
- Classifying and evaluating hazardous materials processes and storage in preparation of Hazardous Materials Inventory Statements (aka commodity / occupancy classification letters).
- Attending project meetings and communicating with design team members, clients, owners, and building/fire officials, as necessary.
The Fire Protection Engineer will also participate in business development activities. These activities may include developing relationships with current and potential clients, being active in local organizations, and assisting in the overall growth efforts of the firm.
This is what you need to be successful:
A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited college, university or engineering school is required. Candidates must be licensed to practice engineering in the State of Texas or the ability to be licensed in the State of Texas. A minimum of five years of work experience in fire protection engineering is preferred.
PDI is looking for someone with:
- The ability to work independently and to juggle multiple priorities,
- Knowledge of International Building and Fire Code and NFPA Standards with the ability to interpret and apply these codes to projects,
- Effective verbal and written communication skills,
- Skill in using modeling software such as HydraCAD, CONTAM, KYPipe, and
- Expertise using Windows, Office 365, AutoCAD or Revit, Adobe Acrobat or BlueBeam Revu.
