Summary:
Protos is looking for an attorney with 3 to 5 years of experience, preferably in insurance defense and/or insurance coverage, to manage litigation matters in coordination with a dedicated litigation paralegal and the Deputy General Counsel. The ideal candidate must have law firm experience, the ability to work well in a lean legal department, be intellectually curious and have a strong desire to learn and grow in the in-house environment. Some experience with employment law is a plus. This role requires the ability to collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders and outside counsel while ensuring efficient, cost-effective and accurate litigation management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage and oversee litigation matters largely being handled by insurance defense counsel but also private outside counsel for certain matters.
- Act as the primary liaison between the company and outside counsel, ensuring accurate, cost-effective and strategic case management.
- Ability to work with decreasing level of supervision.
- Work closely with internal stakeholders to gather facts, evaluate claims, assess potential risks, conduct legal research to support defense/coverage issues/exclusions, determine strength of claims, prepare witnesses, and propose appropriate legal strategies.
- Review, analyze, and respond to third party matters including subpoenas, wage garnishments and records requests.
- Review and respond to discovery requests in coordination with outside counsel.
- Remotely attend depositions, mediations and hearings.
- Some on-site attendance of hearing and trials may be required after the onboarding and training period.
- Work with the Deputy General Counsel to provide legal guidance on dispute resolution and settlements.
- Maintain litigation-related documentation and ensure compliance with internal policies.
- Collaborate with internal departments, including vendor compliance, vendor management, human resources, finance, sales, account management, and operations to support company initiatives.
- Advise internal departments on the best course of action for responding to queries from external parties, including insurance companies, customers, and vendors.
- Monitor changes in litigation trends, laws, and regulations that may impact the organization.
- Identify potential litigation risks and provide feedback to the Legal team and business to minimize exposure proactively across departments (service, vendor, contracting, etc.)
- Some domestic travel may be required to effectuate the above responsibilities.
Experience / Qualifications / Education:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited United States based law school.
- Active bar membership in at least one state in good standing.
- 3–5 years of litigation experience, including representation in depositions and hearings, with a strong preference for insurance defense, insurance coverage; other relevant areas of substantive knowledge could include: professional liability - errors and omissions, premises liability, and/or product liability.
- Strong knowledge of civil litigation, insurance law, and procedural rules.
- Some employment law experience is a plus.
- Law firm experience is required.
- Ability to thrive in a lean and fast-paced legal department, managing multiple cases and priorities effectively.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
- A proactive, intellectually curious mindset with a willingness to learn and grow.
- Knowledge of risk management strategies in an insurance or corporate setting a plus.
