Schedule:
- Typically, 40 hours/week
- Typically, 8hrs a day Monday-Friday on scheduled,with recognized breaks and state or federal holidays as defined in the Maintenance Work Calendar
- Typically,a number of regular or additional overtime hours related to snow removal each winter
- Department, building, and LEA professional development, trainings and meetings
Specific
- Take complete ownership of the job, assuming the role of primary caretaker of the building, grounds and the entire facilities.
- Follow the states Procurement Code when purchasing goods or services.
- Ensure written materials are prepared for proper documentation of all fiscal transactions as well as maintenance or preventive maintenance recordkeeping.
- Collaborate with colleagues to support the special education department and school in general.
- Maintain effective communication channels to ensure a collaborative school community.
- Actively participate in assigned meetings, professional developments, and other trainings.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
- Keep all aspects of the school building and fixtures in good repair. Perform mild to moderate building maintenance, for example, door/handle set repairs, lighting repairs (including bulb replacement), floor repairs, wall repair, painting, electrical and plumbing troubleshooting and minor repairs.
- Perform comprehensive building maintenance as required.
- Perform periodic walk-throughs with written reports to define needs and establish plans to keep the facilities in good repair. Respond timely to remedy identified needs.
- Ensure Preventive Maintenance (PM) is performed on all school systems as applicable or appropriate according to industry standards (HVAC, motorized gym curtains, water softeners, lifts, etc.).
- Arrange with outside vendors for completion of certain projects and the repair and maintenance of certain equipment.
- Retrieve, transport, assemble, clean, repair or perform other tasks related to the procurement and use of both new and used goods, furniture, materials and equipment (including donated materials); and assist with deliveries.
- Coordinate with 3rd parties to provide materials or services required to keep the facilities and grounds in good repair.
- Assist with the development and proper management of key schedules and access controls for each building and work with outside service providers to ensure building safety and security.
- Ensure general safety hazards are identified and addressed timely (with a sense of urgency) to resolution to ensure the safety and well-being of any individual on campus (e.g. address slippery floors, sharp objects, fire hazards/code violations, broken/missing locks, etc.).
- Assist with snow removal at all school campuses, which includes altering work hours, or extending work hours on certain days to ensure the school parking lots and walk areas are free of snow and ice for the beginning and throughout each school day.
- Develop and use ongoing Preventive Maintenance (PM) plans and schedules to ensure school equipmentis properly maintained. Perform, or cause to be performed, PM and general repairs to keep all operations equipment in good repair.
- Recommend and assist with equipment upgrades/replacement when appropriate.
- Open, close, and secure the building and respond to alarm calls after hours.
- Arrange with outside vendors for completion of certain projects and the repair and maintenance of certain equipment.
- Ensure all codes are met, specifically fire systems, elevator systems, trades, backflow, etc. Ensure repairs are made timely to such systems to ensure compliance with each code or inspection area at all times.
- Keep all aspects of the schools grounds clean, free from persistent litter, in good repair and properly groomed for aesthetic appeal.
- Repair sprinklers as needed. Ensure sprinkler coverage of the landscaping. Repair, or cause to be repaired, deficiencies in sprinkler systems, including spring system start-up, fall system blow-out, dry spots, etc.
- Safely use all types of hand tools, power equipment and machinery to accomplish the job functions outlined in this position. Any type of equipment related to school operations and facilities/grounds maintenance may be used by individuals performing the functions of this position.
- Trim, edge and mow lawns and keep them free of weeds and debris. Blow sidewalks to ensure overall lawn maintenance cleanliness following a then-current defined schedule.
- Ensure lawn fertilization, weed control, disease control and other appropriate lawn treatment occurs as needed to ensure the vibrancy and health of lawn and landscaped areas.
- Perform all aspects of exterior grounds maintenance including keeping landscaping, beds, shrubbery and trees, parking lots, lighting, lawns and landscape, sidewalks and curbing clean, groomed and in good repair.
- Arrange with outside vendors for various projects and the repair and non-routine maintenance of equipment.
- Perform all aspects of exterior grounds maintenance including parking lots, lighting, lawns and landscape, sidewalks and curbing.
- Coordinate and assist with snow removal at all three campus locations, including sidewalks, driveways, curbing, parking areas, playgrounds, etc. Apply ice melt and monitor exterior surfaces during inclement weather, including early morning hours and during the school day or weekend.
- Work with the school groundskeeper and 3rd parties to accomplish the above Grounds duties while maintaining oversight.
- Perform and schedule general floor care services including proper tile, carpet and hardwood floor care and maintenance (coordinating with outside service providers as appropriate).
- Perform and schedule all necessary general custodial/janitorial tasks that may be completed during school hours, including maintaining restrooms, replacing paper products, cleaning up messes or problem areas, etc. (Day Porter responsibilities).
- Assist with the set-up, take down and cleaning of equipment for school events and activities as requested.
- Complete, perform and/or schedule periodic cleaning/custodial/maintenance checklists and submit to administration periodically (weekly, or as requested).
- Coordinate with and supervise janitorial staff and/or contracted services to ensure daily janitorial tasks are consistently completed.
- Complete and oversee all aspects of school cleanliness, including periodic cleaning duties and oversight and execution of cleaning and maintenance checklists over school, holiday and summer breaks.
- Monitor students and staff in and around work areas (e.g. halls, multipurpose rooms, lunch rooms, restrooms, grounds etc.) for the purpose of preventing injuries and ensuring site safety while performing job functions.
- Order custodial and other supplies and maintain a prudent inventory, considering bulk order cost savings vs. available capacity for supplies storage.
- Work with 3rd parties to accomplish the above Custodial/Janitorial duties while maintaining oversight.
- Work closely with other members of the maintenance and operations staff in a team-approach, filling in as required, both giving and receiving help freely to ensure the success of the entire team.
- Coordinate routine work and special projects with school admin teams and maintenance staff during school breaks and other times when school is not in session, when maintenance work can be done freely.
- Procure goods and services within budget, following the procurement code as well as ensuring all required purchasing paperwork is submitted on time, complete and accurate.
- Transport school materials and supplies using rented or owned trucks, cars/SUVs, trailers, ATVs, etc.
- Participate in and serve as an integral part of emergency response drills and exercises, as well as real-life (active) emergency situations to help ensure safety, prepare for disasters and help to mitigate risks where possible.
- Ensure the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by oneself and others (in close proximity) while performing Specific Job Functions.

- 3 years of experience as a custodian or maintenance in a school is preferred
- Good organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to multitask easily.
- Positive interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to maintain calm in high-stress situations.
- Willing to effectively problem-solve as needed.
- Basic knowledge of Google Workspace and its collaboration tools.
- Capacity to perform all the responsibilities listed in this posting.
- Must pass a comprehensive background check, including criminal history, and professional references as a condition of employment.
