Purpose:
To provide unskilled and diversified duties in connection with the general maintenance and routine building custodial and janitorial tasks. Maintains facilities, buildings and surrounding grounds in a clean and neat condition
Essential Tasks of the Position:
Performs routine custodial, maintenance and grounds keeping tasks
- Cleans and polishes floors located in storerooms, corridors, elevators, stairwells, lavatories and other areas by sweeping, dry mopping, scrubbing, waxing and polishing, using a variety of hand implements and equipment including brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers and floor buffers
- Maintains rest rooms by sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, disinfecting and deodorizing lavatories, urinals, toilet bowl, sinks, mirrors and fountains
- Maintains grounds including pruning shrubs and trees, reseeding lawns, spraying insecticide and removing snow and ice
- Performs minor buildings/grounds maintenance, including inserting window panes, oiling or lubricating hinges and adjusting various pieces of cleaning equipment
- Performs routine custodial tasks including emptying waste baskets, washing windows, emptying trash compactors, vacuuming rugs and carpets, stripping wax, assisting tenants in moving furniture and similar tasks
- Applies appropriate solvents and solutions including detergents, soaps, scouring powders, waxes and polishes
- Performs a number of routine security functions including checking and securing designated offices and buildings at specific times of the day/night
Performs general cleaning, custodial and routine upkeep of properties, grounds and common areas as assigned
- Assumes responsibility for the safe, sanitary and attractive maintenance of grounds, common areas within assigned locations
- Performs custodial tasks throughout agency properties, common areas (community rooms), offices and maintenance shops
- Responds to work orders issued for minor repairs and general upkeep of assigned areas
- Accounts for basic supplies, materials, tools and equipment stored at areas of assignment
- Operates agency vehicles (up to 2 ton capacity), as assigned

Position Requirements and Qualifications:
Education Level
- Ability to understand English language to an acceptable level for productivity standards, required
- High school diploma or GED, preferred
Experience in Related Field
- No prior experience, required
- 1-2 years’ experience in maintenance or construction, preferred
- Prior experience working in public housing setting, preferred
Knowledge, skills, abilities, licenses and certifications
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all assignments as mandated
- Ability to work harmoniously with other agency personnel
- Ability to relate to and interact with elderly/disabled and family residents in low and moderate income housing settings
- Ability to be flexible and perform work under time pressure
- Ability and willingness to learn appropriate skills, accept responsibility and to complete assignments, as directed
- Working knowledge of methods and practices used in janitorial work and maintenance of buildings
- Working knowledge of proper use of a variety of special cleaning and sanitizing solutions and solvents
- Working knowledge of English language
- Ability to read signs and follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to move heavy furniture, supplies and equipment
- Ability to use common cleaning tools and equipment
- Ability to operate lawn and snow equipment
- RI Driver’s License, preferred
