JOB TITLE: Clinical Laboratory Assistant
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Prepares patient specimens received from Physician offices for laboratory analysis. Draws and collects samples from out patients.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to Laboratory Manager.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination. Varied activities including standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting and stooping. Must be able to lift/carry/push 25 pounds. Occasional stress from workload.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Primary laboratory setting. Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, fumes, hazardous materials, noise and other conditions common to a Clinical Laboratory setting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Properly identifies patient sample, labels, receives sample into computer system. Prepares samples for analysis following laboratory procedure.
2. Centrifuges blood specimens as required by protocol for in-house and send out specimens. Prepares samples to maintain to specimen integrity for transport to various reference labs.
3. Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products. Maintains adequate supplies.
4. Performs venipucture or capillary punctures on patients. Collects urine samples from patients. Identifies and labels specimens correctly.
5. Follows safety, cleanliness and infection control procedures.
6. Maintains appropriate inventory levels to ensure that specimens can be collected as required and rotate supplies.
7. Maintains patient confidentially.
8. Assists the technical staff upon request.
9. Performs any other duty as assigned.
10. Job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to the position.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum one year work experience in a Health Care setting.
KNOWLEDGE:
1. Knowledge of LIS software/personal computer environments helpful.
2. Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques.
3. Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory protocols and policies.
SKILLS:
1. Skill in effectively managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
2. Skill in efficient and effective draws.
3. Skill in pleasant interactions with staff, patients and others.
4. Skill in courteous phone etiquette.
