Providence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptional MIDDLE SCHOOL STEM INSTRUCTIONAL COACH who is highly qualified and skillful to join our community of educators, students, and stakeholders. The Rhode Island Right to Read Act was passed in July of 2019 and requires educators to exhibit either proficiency in or awareness of the knowledge and practices of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy.?Please be advised that this position requires Structured Literacy Awareness Level within one year of hire.


The STEM Instructional Coach maintains a positive, collaborative, and supportive learning environment for the diverse student population of PPSD. As part of the school leadership team, the STEM coach fosters a professional learning community focused on data-driven instructional strategies, supporting implementation of high-quality STEM instruction aligned with NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards), CCSS-Math, and integrated technology practices. The coach supports teachers through coaching cycles, modeling, co-teaching, and professional learning experiences to enhance student engagement and achievement in STEM content areas.


The Providence Public School District (PPSD) serves approximately 22,000 students (about the seating capacity of Madison Square Garden) attending our 37 schools. PPSD employs more than 3,200 professionals who work in and provide support to our schools, which include 20 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 11 high schools and 2 public district charter schools. Of our employees, about 2,000 are educators, and over 600 others directly support our schools' students and families.


Our schools are diverse learning communities. Approximately 68% of our students are Latinx, 15% Black, 7% White, 4% Asian, 5.5% Multi-racial and 1% Native American. Approximately 40% of students are multilingual learners, and about 16% of students receive special education services. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Combined, our students and families speak more than 55 different languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.

This position contains up to five (5) extra days contingent upon funding

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM-related field of education from an accredited college or university required; Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Three years of experience in classroom teaching in a STEM content area is required. Related coaching, leadership, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Multilingual candidates preferred.


RIDE Certification Requirements (at least one of the following):

  • Middle Grades Science Teacher, Grades 5-8

OR

  • Secondary Grades Science or Math Teacher, Grades 7-12

OR

  • All Grades Technology Education Teacher, Grades PK-12


All Grades English to Speakers of Other Languages Teacher, Grades PK-12 (preferred for MLL support)


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

STEM Instructional Leadership

  • Demonstrate expertise in Science, Math, and STEM instruction aligned with NGSS, CCSS-Math, and technology integration standards.
  • Maintain a weekly schedule that prioritizes in-classroom coaching, co-planning during Professional Learning Communities/Collaborative Planning Time, and alignment to instructional priorities and school improvement plans.
  • Support effective use of STEM curricula, lab resources, hands-on learning experiences, and technology tools across classrooms.
  • Facilitate the use of formative and summative data to monitor student progress and guide instructional decision-making in STEM content areas.
  • Lead cycles of coaching with teachers including modeling, co-teaching, observation, and feedback to improve instructional practices.
  • Provide content-focused professional development and lead collaborative planning sessions focused on STEM instruction, interdisciplinary projects, and inquiry-based learning.
  • Support integration of science and mathematics into real-world, culturally responsive, and project-based learning.
  • Collaborate with teachers to use data and assessments to drive STEM instruction, including support for multilingual learners (MLLs) and students with diverse needs.
  • Develop and implement strategies for small-group instruction and intervention in STEM areas when needed.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team and other identified individuals on the planning and development of STEM integration into the school.
  • Engage in district-wide initiatives for leadership and coaching development; attend regular coach meetings and participate in summer professional learning.
  • Other duties as assigned by school leadership.

Multilingual Learner (MLL) Support in STEM

  • Collaborate with teachers to differentiate STEM instruction for MLLs, using sheltered instruction strategies and academic language scaffolding.
  • Ensure instructional materials and lesson planning address both content and language development within STEM contexts.
  • Support school compliance with educational regulations and promote equitable learning opportunities for all students, including MLLs and dually identified students.
  • Serve as a liaison with families and assist with the academic placement and progress of MLLs in STEM content areas.
