Job Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Histology Lab Aide to support our dermatopathology laboratory. This role is essential for maintaining efficient lab operations by assisting with quality control, specimen organization, and supply management. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Quality Control & Workflow Management:
- QC and distribute routine histology slides, recuts, and special stains to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Communicate with histotechnologists and pathologists regarding discrepancies or missing specimens.
Specimen Handling & Organization:
- Assist with block trimming to facilitate microtomy.
- File paraffin blocks accurately and maintain an organized filing system.
- Retrieve and organize blocks for case reviews, additional testing, or external consultations.
Inventory & Supply Management:
- Monitor and maintain stock levels of consumables such as slides, cassettes, and coverslips.
- Track and reorder reagents and chemicals, ensuring proper storage and expiration management.
- Assist in maintaining reagent logs and disposal records as required by lab policies.
Accessioning Support:
- Assist with specimen receipt and check-in to ensure proper labeling and documentation.
- Verify patient and specimen information against requisitions for accuracy.
- Assist in logging specimens into the laboratory information system (LIS) as needed.
- Communicate discrepancies to appropriate personnel for resolution.
General Laboratory Support:
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the lab space, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
- Assist with routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting minor issues.
- Follow all lab safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
Qualifications & Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in a science-related field preferred.
- Prior experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting is a plus but not required.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Basic computer skills for logging inventory and tracking specimens.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform tasks requiring fine motor skills.
Work Environment & Schedule:
Hiring two positions:
- 1st shift (Mon-Fri): 8 am—4 pm
- 3rd shift (Sun-Thurs): 7 pm—3 am (includes 10% shift differential pay)
Work is performed in a laboratory setting with exposure to biological specimens and chemicals (proper PPE provided).
May require occasional lifting of supplies or laboratory equipment (up to 50 lbs).
