Surgical Nurse (part time- schedule will vary but will remain between the days of Monday through Friday, as early as 5:30 AM and as late as 1 PM with ability to stay later as needed to cover PTO/Call ins)
Under the general supervision of the OR Manager, the registered professional nurse will assume the overall responsibility for management of the patient to which he/she is assigned.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The surgical nurse assists with patient care during surgery and in both the pre- and post-operative settings. At Pryor Health, surgical nurses are the bridge between the surgical team and the patient. This role includes assisting the surgical team during surgery, sterilizing surgical instruments as needed, and as a team ensuring the room is prepared for surgery. Following surgery, they advise physicians and other health professionals about the patient's progress in the recovery room. They also ensure that patients' needs are met. In addition to their clinical duties, surgical nurses provide education about post-surgical care to patients and their families.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Utilize acquired knowledge and skills related to perioperative nursing care, procedures, and equipment to provide safe, individualized patient care.
- Keep extra supplies available in the room to support sterile team as needed, avoiding necessity to leave room during surgical procedure.
- Assist in the preparation of the operating room environment
- After properly masking, open sterile supplies as needed, observing principles of aseptic technique.
- Connect the anesthesia machine to medical gas supply, checking hoses, bag, and CO2 tubing. Set up suction for use by anesthesiologist. Ensure that any additional anesthesia equipment that may be needed is readily available.
- When the room is ready, bring the patient to the O.R. after proper verification of patient identification and consent for surgical procedure.
- Stand by patient’s side during anesthesia induction to assist anesthesiologist as needed.
- Assist surgeon and anesthesiologist in positioning patient.
- Assist in skin antisepsis or “prepping” patient, as needed.
- Anticipate needs of sterile team and anesthesiologist and respond quickly and efficiently as needs arise.
- Remain attentive to the progress of the surgical procedure and needs of individual team members by watching and listening, giving manager adequate notification of delays, conflicts, problems, etc.
- Complete appropriate records/documentation.
- Follow established Surgery Center policies and procedures related to sponges, sharps, and instrument counts and handling of tissue specimens, with awareness of legal liabilities.
- Observe infection control procedures to minimize the risk of cross-contamination between surgical patients and staff. Practice universal precautions at all times.
- Assist with dressings and transfer of patient from operating room table to recovery chairs/carts.
- Help as needed with patient and accompany patient to post procedure area; when pre/post staff are unable to transport to the pre/post area from the OR.
- Help O.R. Tech clean the room and prepare for the next procedure.
- Assist with the signing out at the beginning of the day and the returning at the end of the day any narcotics from the anesthesia provider. Count and verify narcotics and waste as stated per policy.
- Relieve other nurses and or CMA for breaks and lunch as needed and/or assigned by the OR manager/designee.
- Demonstrate ability to work effectively in demanding working conditions.
- Establish and maintain open communication with co-workers, team members, and OR Manager to assist in smooth execution of the daily schedule.
- Demonstrate personal characteristics and interpersonal skills to work closely with many team members at the same time.
- Provide moderate sedation under physician’s direction-RN Only
- Perform other site-specific duties as assigned.
- Recover patients as needed
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Possess good communication skills and the ability to maintain interactive/interpersonal relationships
- Possess a good working knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and legal aspects of nursing, and techniques, care and use of equipment used in an ambulatory surgery center setting
- Available and willingness to change hours as staffing needs require
- Adaptable to varied and quickly changing duties without requiring detailed or repeated instructions
- Must have ability to establish priorities in fulfillment of duties

LICENSURE:
- MINIMUM
- State of Illinois RN licensure
- CPR
- ACLS required to be obtained within 3 months of hire date- Able to get certified at our facility
- PREFERRED
- CNOR Certification
