Responsibilities

The Psychiatric Institute of Washington provides comprehensive behavioral healthcare for children, adolescents, adults, and senior adults suffering from mental health and addictive illnesses.  PIW is a 130 bed, short-term, acute care hospital offering inpatient, partial and intensive outpatient hospitalization, as well as specialized treatment programs for chemical dependency.  PIW has an excellent reputation as an innovative hospital with caring, dedicated staff, experienced in the delivery of behavioral healthcare.  Situated in the safe, historical Tenleytown neighborhood, PIW is one mile from the Tenleytown Metro stop and within walking distance to local cafes and restaurants.

Qualifications

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Basic systems knowledge (list systems used): Health Information Management (HIM) system – Cerner preferred.

Specialized Skills and Knowledge
List the minimum required specific knowledge and skills necessary to perform this job. (e.g., basic accounting principles, computer programming, spreadsheets, specific healthcare processes, etc.
1. Four or more years of inpatient psychiatric experience with clinical and administrative responsibilities. At least two years of experience in a supervisory position. 
2. Knowledge of management principles and practice methods, techniques, and skills integrating management systems in an acute behavioral healthcare setting. 
3. Experience with policies and procedures related to the scope of nursing. 

4. Ability to collaborate with staff and patients of all racial, ethnicities, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

5. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to senior management, employees of varied technical support staff, and community organizations.

6. The ability to manage staff and advise senior management.

 

Supervision
• Rounds to assess current staffing on units. Records staffing corrections in the shift report log binder.
• Directs activities necessary for efficient functioning of systems and unit personnel.
• Investigates patient and staff grievances promptly. Informs Nurse Managers, Program Directors, and Director of Nursing of grievances as needed.
• Evaluates and verifies employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques.
• Identifies staff development and training needs and ensures that training is provided.
• Interviews and selects nursing staff.
• Facilitates in-service training.
Nursing
• Coordinates resources from other disciplines and departments in the delivery of patient care.
• Ensures that diagnostic, consultative, and medical services for patients are provided promptly as ordered.
• Determines the effectiveness of the plan of care through documentation of patient care outcomes.
• Provides professional consultation to colleagues and other hospital staff and seeks assistance from peers as needed.
• Actively participates in nursing and hospital committees. Verbalizes knowledge of professional issues and willingness to accomplish assigned tasks.
• During busy times on the unit, assists nursing staff to provide support.
