Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is seeking a Denverite Intern for Summer 2025.

This is not a remote position. This role is expected to reside in the greater Denver metro area upon starting.

About the Position:

The Denverite Intern supports the success of Colorado Public Radio by producing relevant and engaging digital articles as well as editorial support for staff. This position will pitch, report, write news stories and features, and will help develop newsletters and social media posts. Coverage will include both breaking news and enterprise stories about interesting people, places and trends in Denver.

Key Learning objectives for this experience include -

  • Developing your reporting, analysis and writing skills
  • Learning how to develop strong headlines and implement search engine optimization techniques
  • Developing your story research skills and practicing crafting strong interview questions
  • Identifying and developing relationships with reliable sources
  • Creating sharp story pitches with clear focus
  • Learning digital production skills for stories and a daily newsletter

About You:

You are developing your skills in journalism, whether through coursework, work at a student paper, freelance projects, internships, or independent efforts. Prior experience in a traditional news role is not required. For example, if you’ve started a news-related TikTok for your high school or college, we want to hear from you! However, you must understand the core ethics and principles of journalism and be able to relate your experience to them to qualify for this internship.

You are someone who can take an assigned topic and, with some guidance, think creatively about how to approach it. Curiosity, a drive to uncover unexpected sources of information, and an enjoyment of talking with others are essential. This internship will help you develop confidence in calling and interviewing people, but you should already have solid verbal communication skills. Writing skills are also a must. While we will develop this further in the internship, you should be able to produce clear, concise, and grammatically correct work.

Our ideal candidate is familiar with the Denver Metro area and has experience with social media engagement, whether through academic work or personal projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of journalistic tenets and ethics
  • Experience in writing news articles (can be at a student or independent level)
  • Knowledge of or interest in one of the topics Denverite covers (local government, arts and culture, etc.)
  • Experience with Google Suite
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people across many areas of interest and across platforms
  • Dedication to creating content that reflects and serves a diversity of potential audiences in Colorado through language, images and accessible tools
  • Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

Education Equivalency:

  • This internship is open to students pursuing an associates, bachelors, or relevant certificate.

Don't meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At Colorado Public Radio, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, equitable and authentic workplace. If you're excited about this role, but your past experience doesn't perfectly align with every qualification in the job posting, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles with us.
