Salary is based upon experience as a licensed and practicing attorney in accordance with statute and agency hiring guidelines. Full State Benefits Package, including retirement-pension and 401K, medical, dental, vision, tuition discount program.

Who we are and what we do:

State of Tennessee District Public Defenders Conference - represent indigent persons in General Sessions and Circuit Courts for persons whom the District Public Defender has been appointed as counsel by the courts.

Job Overview:

Shall represent indigent citizens accused of criminal activity in General Sessions Court and Criminal Court. Representation shall include performing the appropriate pre-trial, trial ,sentencing duties and appeals.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be licensed to practice law issued by the Supreme Court for the State of Tennessee.

Key responsibilities:

• The attorney shall represent indigent citizens accused of criminal activity who have been appointed as counsel by the court to the office of the District Public Defender in General Sessions Court, and Criminal Court. Criminal representation shall include performing the appropriate pre-trial, trial and sentencing duties.
• The attorney shall represent on appeal and accused indigent citizen who has been appointed as counsel by the court to the office of the District Public Defender who is aggrieved by the judgement rendered in General Session Court, and Criminal Court. The attorney shall advise such aggrieved client fully concerning the rights of appellate review. The attorney shall take all steps necessary to perfect the appeal, including a new trial motion when required and the filing of all essential transcripts and records with the clerk of the appropriate court.
