The placement of this position will be with The KU Center for Community Health and Development through the Youth Violence Prevention Center – Kansas City (YVPC-KC) which is designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a National Center of Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention. The center is also affiliated with the Center for Community Health and Development at the University of Kansas (KU CCHD). KU CCHD operates a satellite office in Kansas City at the Juniper Garden Children’s Campus (Suite 300), while its main office is located in Lawrence, KS.
This role is ideal for an individual with experience and interest in youth engagement and partnership development. The selected members will serve with the ThrYve Youth Advisory Board to support public health initiatives aimed at reducing youth violence in Kansas City. YVPC-KC is implementing the ThrYve Violence Prevention Approach (Together Helping to Reduce Youth Violence for Equity) to contribute to addressing youth violence prevention efforts. The AmeriCorps Violence Prevention Engagement Specialist will provide direct youth engagement and capacity-building support for selected public health strategies and community safety initiatives in Wyandotte County. The AmeriCorps member will provide in-depth support through evaluation support, action planning, partner coordination, and community engagement. Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Participate in Community Partner meetings
- Complete KU HIPAA Training and all required AmeriCorps Kansas Training
- Within the first month, meet with supervisor to establish 30-day goals regarding orientation to project and site
- Facilitate and participate with YVPC-KC/ThrYve staff and partner meetings, including youth meetings and sessions. Provide meeting (e.g., agenda, minutes) and communications support with the staff and youth using technology including Teams, Planner, and Text-Em-All.
- Participate in online courses, networking events, webinars, and more as identified by supervisor, CNCS, community partners, UG PHA Program Staff, etc.
- Assist with collecting and reviewing data from the ThrYve program and partners to examine program and community outcomes. Track the number of community members, including youth engaged in ThrYve activities using the Community Check Box.
- Review and update participant attendance and support regular audits to ensure all pertinent paperwork is collected by program participants and ThrYve partner participation.
- Facilitate youth engagement activities during out-of-school time and provide supports to the Youth Advisory Board and Youth Leadership Team
- Assist with supporting partnership development and change lever action plan development support for the ThrYve System Advisory Board and Youth Advisory Board as a part of the YVPC-KC. Collect and analyze information related to the implementation of change lever plans.
- Implement and support data collection, quality assurance, and data analysis through the documentation and review using the Community Check Box Evaluation System. Provide project support including community-friendly technical reports, presentations, planning guides, and other materials. Support grant proposal development, writing, and other tasks, as needed.
- Provide evaluation and capacity-building supports (e.g., survey administration) to youth and families served by the YVPC-KC/ThrYve.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of service. If an individual is under 18, parental consent is required to participate in an AmeriCorps Kansas Program.
- Have a high school diploma, diploma completion certificate/GED, or agree to obtain such before using the education award.
- Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident requirement.
- Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria.
- Available Monday through Friday between 9:00 am – 6:00 pm; some weekends and evenings
- Basic computer skills as an entry level, and they will be expected to complete related IT trainings during the first months of service (Microsoft suite, Zoom, Teams, etc.).
- Experience and familiarity with using computers and computer programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
- Precision and attention to details are also required skills
- At least one year experience working with youth and/or young adults.
- Experience working with the community
- Bachelor's degree preferred
AmeriCorps State/National Member Compensation:
Option 1)
- Must serve at least 34 hours a week, with a total of 675 hours by August 13, 2025
- Receive a total living allowance of $8,964.00
- Upon successful completion of service, receive a Segal Education Award for college loans or future education expenses of $2,817.14
Option 2) .
- Must serve at least 23 hours a week, with a total of 450 hours by August 13, 2025
- Receive a total living allowance of $5,976.00
- Upon successful completion of service, receive a Segal Education Award for college loans or future education expenses of $1,956.35
