TEACHER OF THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED, ESY ALL PROGRAMS
POSITION OVERVIEW
Provide consultation and direct services to meet the educational needs of visually impaired students in BEEP, K-8, High School and/or Post-Secondary/Transition programs who require an Extended School Year (ESY), per their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Assists students, parents, and special education personnel in:
- understanding the unique educational needs and learning characteristics of visually impaired students
- interpreting visually impaired students’ specific eye conditions, the educational implications of visual impairments, and the results of functional vision and learning media assessments.
- Consults regularly with special education personnel and parents to coordinate programs and services for visually impaired students.
- Assists administrators and special education staff in making environmental adjustments for visually impaired students in the ESY learning environment
- Shares responsibility with special education staff in the identification of instructional areas in which the student requires assistance
- Assures that large-type or braille texts, supplementary materials, educational aids, and equipment needed by visually impaired students, and the staff are provided in a timely manner.
- Provides instruction to students to maintain skills in areas that include the following, as indicated by each student’s IEP:
- low vision & visual efficiency skills,
- concept development & academic skills,
- daily living skills,
- career & vocational education skills,
- communication skills (these skills include braille reading and writing as appropriate),
- social/emotional skills and abilities
- sensory motor skills.
- Provides assistance to special education teachers in academic subjects and activities of the classroom that, as a direct result of the student's visual impairment, require adaptation for the student
- Schedules time efficiently for consultation, instruction, and planning, preparation of materials, and travel to ESY sites
- Establishes contact with parents and documents such contact
- Adapt as needed to changes in student and/or team response, available treatment locations, and educational activities
- Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment
QUALIFICATIONS-PREFERRED:
- Certified 3-21 years old
- Experience with functional vision and learning media assessment
- Experience with assistive technology
- Experience with orientation and mobility
- Instructional knowledge of braille /Nemeth code(reading/writing)
Schedule:
- July 8, 2024 - August 15, 2024
- 9:00 - 2:00, Monday - Thursday - Hours, sites, ages and schedule are dependent on caseload
- Additional 1-2 days of training prior to start of program
- Additional 30 minutes per day for planning
