Substitute YOLA Teaching Artist
Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) is a community of high-performing public schools that utilizes a comprehensive approach to prepare students from preschool through high school for success in college and in life. We integrate academic rigor, community, family, and wellness to empower students to thrive in a culturally connected and changing world. Founded in 2000, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy students represent the neighborhood of MacArthur Park west of downtown Los Angeles, a community that is one of the most under-resourced and densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Currently, CNCA has eight campuses that serve over 3,500 students from pre-K through 12th grade.
The Opportunity
Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) is the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s initiative to establish youth orchestras in underserved communities throughout Los Angeles, with YOLA at Camino Nuevo marking YOLA’s fourth youth orchestra endeavor. Through YOLA, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. As a member of the Camino Nuevo Charter Academy team, reporting directly to the Kayne Siart campus Principal, the Substitute YOLA Teaching artist works on-call and as requested during the traditional school year fulfilling assignments based on the needs of the program. The Substitute Teaching Artists will support the YOLA philosophy and community, and help facilitate community and family involvement.
Essential Functions:
As a YOLA at Camino Nuevo faculty member responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Collaborating with YOLA at Camino Nuevo faculty to create a shared curriculum and culture inspired by the ideals and philosophies of El Sistema
Prepare and/or implement lesson plans that lead to student support and mastery of curriculum content in the least restrictive environment
Communicating with YOLA at Camino Nuevo academic tutors and parents to understand each child holistically
Preparation and communication with music teachers, YOLA Conductor, Program Director, and LA Philharmonic Staff.
Other duties as assigned
