Job Summary
Performs a wide variety of skilled and unskilled assignments related to the maintenance, repair or construction of park irrigation systems, athletic fields and park and open space facilities, pools, and associated equipment.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Performs park maintenance duties including various combinations of the following: irrigates, mows, weeds, trims, renovates, and fertilizes turf areas.
- Maintains trees, shrubs, and beds throughout the district by watering, pruning, trimming, planting, removing, and weeding.
- Clears snow, leaves, trash and debris from rights-of-way, sidewalks, and sports fields.
- Empties trash receptacles and transports rubbish, picks up litter.
- Assists in the cleaning of parks, restrooms, park facilities and public grounds.
- Conducts safety inspections for all park facilities, equipment, public grounds and informs supervisor of needed repairs.
- Inspects parks and trails for safety hazards such as debris and erosion.
- Performs maintenance on the ball fields including repairing batter boxes and pitching mound areas, removes litter, sweeps dugouts, clean bleachers and dugouts.
- Performs in field maintenance including: hand rakes perimeter, edge, scarify, nail drag and safety drag infield; transport equipment.
- Performs pool maintenance: Start up and close down for the season, clean pool, locker rooms, and decks. Add chemicals, check chemical reads on a daily basis, ensure facility is safe for the public.
- Performs custodial and general maintenance duties in and around restrooms at facilities and locker rooms at pool.
- Mix chemicals and fertilizers according to predetermined formula and operate spray rig to apply chemicals and fertilizers to trees, shrubs, grass, and weeds.
- Inspects and repairs park equipment and facilities, such as picnic tables and grills.
- Maintains and repairs park irrigation system, changing and adjusting sprinkler heads, maintaining controllers, and assisting in the installation and major maintenance of irrigation plumbing.
- Operates all necessary motorized equipment including: mowers, rider mowers, equipment trailers, pickup and dump trucks, tractors, and similar equipment.
- Operates small and medium size equipment such as blowers, weed eaters, trimmers, edgers, chain saws, power washers, and jackhammers.
- Responds to requests, concerns and inquiries from the public and other staff.
- Maintains vehicle logs and may be required to fill out daily logs.
- May be required to work overtime.
- May work a varying schedule and/or shift.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- May fill in as office help in the absence of the parks office staff.
- Employees may be subject to 24-hour on call availability and must be able to work any shift at any location as required.
Supervisory Responsibility
- May oversee the work of seasonal park maintenance workers.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of laws and safety related to vehicle operation.
- Knowledge of park maintenance safety procedures.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of park maintenance.
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the Pueblo West Metropolitan District.
- Knowledge of equipment used in park maintenance including mowing equipment, edgers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, pesticide applicators, power drills and saws, aerators, hand tools, and snow removal equipment.
Skills
- Skill in operating a two-way radio.
- Skill in the safe and lawful operation of all equipment required for the job including equipment used in parks, sports fields, and grounds maintenance.
Abilities
- Ability to comprehend and follow verbal or written instructions.
- Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district employees and the general public.
- Must have ability to comply with safety standards set forth by the Pueblo West Metropolitan District.
- Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgement.
Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.)
Required Education/Certifications Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- One year of related experience. Grounds maintenance or landscape experience preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Must have and maintain a valid Colorado class R drivers license.
- Must have and maintain a Certified Pool Operator (CPO), or will be required within 90 days of hiring (extended if class not available).
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, stoop, squat, see, hear, and demonstrate manual dexterity.
- This position requires the employee to lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
- The employee is required to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Work Schedule
- Employees may be subject to 24-hour on call availability and must be able to work any shift at any location as required.
- May be required to work overtime.
- May work a varying schedule and/or shift.
