OBJECTIVE: In fulfilling the Firm's mission, the A&A Senior Accountant acts as the fieldwork in-charge on accounting and auditing engagements and is responsible for the day-to-day conduct of the work. The Senior Accountant supports the Firm's goals and values through all professional communications and the maintenance of positive working relationships. Depending on the size of the engagement, an A&A Senior Accountant may assume several "Manager level" responsibilities, or functions as a heavy Staff Accountant.
RESPONSIBILITIES
ENGAGEMENT
- Develops a relationship with engagement-related client personnel.
- Maintains contact with client personnel throughout the year; possesses a knowledge of the client and the client’s business.
- Is responsible for the day-to-day conduct of engagements.
- Makes decisions on routine engagement matters.
- Coordinates and leads engagement planning process (under supervision of Manager or Officer), including scheduling of planning meeting and fieldwork, discussions with appropriate client and Firm personnel to understand client's current business activity, design of test work procedures, review of minutes, audit program preparation, review of business agreements, etc.
- Performs more difficult or complex procedures, such as the evaluation of accounting reserves, inventory valuation and obsolescence, deferred income taxes, revenue recognition, complex income tax accruals, etc.
- Supervises and reviews work of Staff Accountants.
- Brings unusual or significant accounting/auditing questions to the attention of the Manager or Officer.
- Researches and proposes resolution to technical accounting and auditing matters.
- Develops ability to recognize business tax issues.
- Wraps up engagement according to engagement timetable and alerts supervisor of scheduling concerns.
- Communicates with appropriate individuals within the firm and documents the status of A&A. Keeps Officer or Manager informed of all important developments on engagement.
- Coordinates the scheduling of engagement reviews by supervisors and tax department.
- Assists in communicating progress of engagements, problems and resolutions to client.
- Prepares client-centered correspondence for review by an appropriate supervisor.
- Assists in presenting financial statements and letters to clients at wrap-up meetings.
- Monitors engagement budget and alerts supervisor of potential concerns and suggests fee modification actions.
- Monitors staff performance and alerts supervisor of training or development needs.
- Demonstrates effective project management skills, inspires teamwork and responsibility with engagement team members, and uses current technology and tools to enhance the effectiveness of deliverables and service.
- Achieves an acceptable level of budget realization on services performed and supervised.
PEOPLE MANAGEMENT
- Assigns work to staff based on their knowledge and capabilities.
- Provides supervision and on the job training to staff assigned to engagements.
- Supports training of team members, offers guidance and direction, and provides constructive criticism of workpapers.
- Assists with the development of training programs and acts as instructor in professional development programs.
- Assist in mentoring and developing the technical and professional skills of A&A staff.
- Assists Managers and Officers in staff management, as required, including participating in staff performance evaluations (if requested) and providing verbal and written feedback.
BUSINESS PROMOTION AND GROWTH
- Displays active community involvement and begin to develop a personal marketing plan.
- Develops and expands external referral networks.
- Supports firm personnel in marketing efforts, as requested (budget preparation, support the selling of expanded service opportunities to clients, etc.).
- Develops ability to recognize business problems and expanded service opportunities with existing clients.
- Begins to enhance sales, writing, communication, inter-personal and other human relation skills.
- If not yet achieved, actively pursues CPA certification by sitting for all scheduled exams.
DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATION
- Possesses an understanding of the economics of the A&A business and its relation to the firm.
- Supports departmental goals, policies, and guidelines.
- Assumes responsibilities as a "champion" in specific departmental software applications.
- Participates in other administrative activities as requested by the Officers or Managers.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting preferred.
- Typically, a minimum 2-year professional experience in public accounting, technically proficient, demonstrating a progression in complexity and scope of engagements, with supervisory potential.
- Actively pursuing CPA certification, by sitting for all scheduled exams. Proficient in use of computers, accounting software and audit software programs.
- Participation in marketing activities.
- Above average written and verbal communication skills. Successful problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to perform in highly interruptive conditions.
- Ability to train and supervise staff in accounting, auditing and software skills in client, office, and classroom settings.
- Ability to understand and document accounting systems. Project management ability.
- Ability to perform under time-pressures and meet deadlines.
- Ability to effectively identify engagement situations that may involve controversy and influence others to resolution.

- Overtime work required periodically throughout year.
- Total hours generally range from 2,080-2,300, including PTO.
