Job Overview
A Transportation Paraprofessional provides assistance to students with special needs during transportation to and from school. They ensure students’ safety, comfort, and adherence to school district policies while riding the bus or other school-provided transportation.
Duties
- Assist students with boarding and exiting the vehicle safely.
- Secure students in their seats, including using seat belts, harnesses, or wheelchair restraints as necessary.
- Monitor student behavior and provide support to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
- Communicate with the bus driver regarding student needs and any concerns during transport.
- Provide assistance to students with mobility challenges, including lifting and transferring when needed.
- Supervise students to ensure compliance with transportation rules and safety guidelines.
- Respond to medical or behavioral emergencies following school district protocols.
- Assist in loading/unloading medical or assistive devices (e.g., wheelchairs, walkers).
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and comply with all school district policies.
- Communicate with teachers, parents, and school staff about students’ transportation needs and concerns.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Experience working with children, particularly those with disabilities, preferred.
- Basic knowledge of first aid and CPR (certification may be required).
- Ability to remain calm and act appropriately in emergency situations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lift and assist students with mobility needs.
- Patience, compassion, and an understanding of diverse student needs.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Work is primarily conducted inside a school bus or transportation vehicle.
- Requires frequent standing, bending, lifting, and assisting students with movement.
- Exposure to various weather conditions when assisting students in and out of the vehicle.
Reports To:
Transportation Supervisor, Special Education Coordinator, or School Administration.
