JOB SUMMARY: To participate in a career development program designed to recruit potential Deputies for the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office. Participants will perform a variety of duties while providing assistance to various divisions of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office to acquire a working knowledge of departmental practices, procedures, and operations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Receives telephone calls regarding reports of nonemergency incidents, accidents, and requests for information; completes a form for each non-emergency incident or accident by obtaining relevant information.
- Transfers emergency calls to the Communications Center for immediate action; enters priority information into a computer system for broadcast by Communications Operators.
- Compiles and maintains a daily tally sheet on calls received, including the number of calls, type, and other related information.
- Assists citizens by answering questions and providing information; completes a report for non-emergency situations and refers complex questions or complaints to the Records Supervisor.
- Totals daily offense statistics and records them in a book according to classification, age, and ethnic characteristics; balances totals to the computer figures assigned.
- Completes supplemental forms which contain additional information that will be attached to original reports.
- Completes procedure forms for unique situations not addressed in the current procedure manual.
- Testifies in court and at hearings concerning information reported over the telephone as needed.
- Participates in community events and meetings to promote crime reduction and community-oriented policing by interacting with district residents.
- Provides assistance to Detention Facility staff in the administration of various re-entry and educational programs within the facility, visitation, and other assignments as needed.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Enters Police Incident Reports and Accident Reports into the computer terminal to assign an identification number to each report; scans, stores, and retrieves reports.
- Makes computer inquiries into the Arkansas Crime Information Center (ACIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as needed.
- Assists the Investigations Division with investigations to include making contact and following up with victims, gathering additional information, transporting files and property, and following up on reports.
- Rides along with Deputies on patrol to learn how to handle real-life situations such as traffic stops, accidents, crime scenes, etc.
- Assists with the maintenance of patrol vehicles and equipment to ensure clean, safe, and working order.
- Performs other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are performed in various capacities and locations within Pulaski County. Exposure to potentially dangerous and hazardous situations involving criminal activities is possible. Duties may be performed in inclement weather conditions. Must work on a variable shift basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

- Some knowledge of the principles, techniques, methods, and practices of law enforcement.
- Good knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
- Good knowledge of the principles and procedures of effective recordkeeping.
- Ability to handle confidential materials in a reliable manner.
- Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with members of the public, other County employees, and employees of other agencies.
- Ability to learn the practices, policies, and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office.
- Ability to prepare accurate and precise accident and incident narrative and numerical reports.
- Ability to answer a multi-line telephone.
- Ability to attend work regularly and reliably.
- Skill in the operation of and data entry into a computer utilizing various word processing and other related software programs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Digital dexterity is necessary for writing and keyboard operation.
- Hearing necessary to communicate via radio or phone.
- Ability to effectively communicate in person, by telephone, and through the use of radio communications equipment.

- Ability to lift and carry loads up to 20 pounds.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or a GED equivalency; some experience with data entry, record keeping, entering information into a computer or related area; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
